I had heard somewhere that there was a new trend in the aviation industry.

Apparently, some private air carriers are running commercial flights
to and from smaller general aviation airports just close to large
cities. In doing this, passnegers pay a small premium, but are
avoided the hassle of going through security, parking, etc. that you
find at larger airports.

Is this an urban legend, or is this really a feasible business model?
Any links you can provide to carriers actually doing this would be
helpful.

Hi There.

No, this is not an urban myth. This is actually happening. With
businessmen now being forced to stand inline at major airports for
hours even though they only have an briefcase and/or laptop to clear
customs and all the security. This is a great way to save time. The
other factor is thaht this service is great for peeple and/or
organizations who are nor big and/or rich enough to afford a private
or leased jet. Trust me this has been on TV several times particularl,
if I remember correctly, German TV.

This link migth help. It is from ERSA's 45 congress:

These are some excerpts: In recent years there has been tremendous
interest in the growth of low-cost airlines in Europe operating from
regional and secondary airports. These have been entirely in the
short-haul sector, however. Intercontinental services remain dominated
by a few large airports such as London Heathrow, Frankfurt, Paris CDG
and Amsterdam.

This paper examines the recent development of long-haul services and
shows that some of the medium sized European airports have seen their
network reduced in the last decade, while it also appears more
difficult to replicate Ryanair?s use of obscure minor airports in the
long-haul arena.

Examples include London Gatwick which has the main London service from
many smaller UK airports such as Jersey, Inverness and Plymouth and
also Luton in London.

Air Canada started this as well I think. This is ll very big in Europe
and so has most its operators and customers over there
