I am allergic to Animals, Dogs and Cats in particular and I am trying to set up travel plans. I know Southwest has a allergy friendly policy (they only allow seeing eye dogs). What other airlines have similar or better policies? What contacts can I make and exceptions will be made to get through customs? (Police Dogs routinely sniff around airports, so I can't spend too long inside of one) FYI, the airports I will be looking at are Buffalo, NY; LAX; Nashville, TN; and Kansas City |

Every airline, including Southwest, is required by Federal law to allow service animals (not just seeing-eye dogs) on their flights. |

Most airlines will permit one or two animals in the cabin but they must be pre-registered. This would mean the reservations department can alert you to animals on the flight before you make your reservation. Amtrak coes not permit animals to travel in the passenger cars. |

Hagan, I understand they have to allow service animals, but I have never seen a service animal that is not a dog on a flight and they are quite rare. I am not as worried about service dogs as I am about pets, specifically cats. Service dogs just don't have the frequency of occurance that pets do so I can expect a flight to be fairly pet free and the rare occurance be that I get bumped rather than vice versa. Actually, I find this law interesting because it is part of the equal access laws, and makes access to flights for allergic individuals difficult if not impossible. Funfest, airlines do not require preregistration of animals in the cabins if they are small enough and there are not too many on a particular flight. This is actually one of my main gripes with the airlines, and one which does not have an easy work around (basically I wait until everyone has boarded and then they tell me). Your comment on Amtrak is very helpful though... thank you for that. |
