Thank you so much for this information. Much of it is awesome,
although I should have been more clear in my initial request (shame on
me!)
My intention would be to use the royalty-free images or clipart in a
compilation as a reference for face painting designs. So that would
mean that I would need absolute royalty-free, okay for commercial use
reprinting and distrbution, images. Not easy to find, I know.
There was one in your list which fits the bill as described above. I
have also written letters of request for reprint permission to several
more.
Hopefully this will help you define a little more what I'm looking
for. Thanks so much for your help! Google Answers is an awesome
service.

Thank you for your clarification. Yes, if you need to reprint, then
you do need permission. I'll certainly be glad to search around more
for you, and post as soon as possible. So, if I find royalty-free, but
there is a small fee for obtaining the images, that is OK?
Sincerely, Crabcakes

yes, don't make yourself crazy looking for a ton of them, one or two
is okay, and if there's a small fee to obtain the rights to the
images, that's certainly fine to.
Some I have found (even fee-based clipart memberships) will offer
rights to use the images 'royalty free' in certain commercial
applications, but they won't allow usage for applications that
including reselling or redistribution. That is the category I'm
falling under as the information is part of a bigger project that will
be redistributed.

Jonahd,
Thank you for your clarification. You worded your question correctly,
I simply misunderstood. Here are some links for you, but finding
public domain images with the shapes you want is difficult. Most
"free", royalty free clipart found on line is free for use, but not
for resale.
Public domain images are your best bet. Public domain images are free
for use, copyright free and royalty free.
http://www.unc.edu/~unclng/public-d.htm
This link has numerous copyright free books for sale. If you live near
a Barnes and Noble or Borders bookstore, you can see these books. The
bookstore won't have the variety this site has, but you might find
what you want in the store. I have used a few of these books myself!
(You'll need to scan the work into your PC)

This page has hearts. Each page has links to other graphics.

Write for permission to reprint:

This may be helpful

I would suggest checking with your local library for books with public
domain grahics, that you could scan. Another option would be to hire
an artist, such as a local high school student, to draw the images you
need. (You may want to draw up a contract giving you permission to
print her/his images).
I'm sorry I was unable to locate any more, even after an extensive
search. I will be glad to ask the editors to remove my answer so
another researcher could try and locate more for you.
Regards, Crabcakes

No, you're information is fabulous. Not only have you given me plenty
of sites to request permission for reprinting, but you've offered up
some great alternatives. Thank you so much!
