Whether you are a parent, an educator, a mathematician or an expert in
mathematics, science, business or other fields, I would greatly
appreciate your suggestions, ideas, experience, references and
comments about helping female children aged 7 to 11 to learn
mathematics in novel and practical ways.
In order to facilitate learning, what games, stories, jokes, fictional
characters, constructs and logical or physical models do you use or
recommend?
Partial answers and comments are most welcome.

Hello bizuth-ga,

This was another fun project. I?ve collected a wide variety of
resources for you on the subject of math for girls. In the course of
the research I ran across some websites that offered wonderful
resources for teaching math in general so I?ve included these as well.
I also found some research reports on the question of gender equity in
math and included those too.

Enjoy!

sophisticated game is probably best enjoyed on a very fast Internet
connection. The site also includes articles about girls and computer
games and an account of updates to the game.)

Design Your Future

Many people recognize Autodesk, Inc., as a world leader in the design
software industry. But there's another side to the company that may
not be as well known -- its long-term commitment to leadership by
example in education. "Design Your Future: Math, Science, and
Technology for Girls" was an educational initiative launched by
Autodesk in October, 1997. Design Your Future (DYF) was championed by
Autodesk Chairman and CEO Carol Bartz, and driven by a group of female
managers at Autodesk in partnership with a team of female interns.

The goal of the DYF demonstration project was to inspire and empower
girls to pursue careers in math, science, and technology, and to
influence other companies to do the same. Below are some of the
programs DYF included during its six year history from 1997 to 2003:

Girlstart is a non-profit organization created to empower girls to
excel in math, science, and technology. Founded in 1997 in Austin,
Texas, Girlstart engages, educates, and motivates girls to achieve the
knowledge and confidence to participate in advanced math and science
classes and future careers.

Girlstart offers a variety of educational formats designed for middle
school girls through after-school programs, Saturday camps, and summer
camps. The common theme to all Girlstart programs is the exploration
of science, math, and technology in a hands-on, supportive, and fun
girl-friendly environment. These programs are held at the Girlstart
Tech Center and in six Austin-area middle schools.

I just spent a semester tutoring my 8 year old grand-daughter in both
reading and maths. We didn't do anything more exotic than using
published copies of our state achievement tests (in this case, Texas
TEKS, TAKS and others) and humble flash cards, plus a few games, etc.
But by far the most important factors that had the greatest effect
were the personal one-on-one attention and interest, plus the positive
reassurance that her problems with math were not because she "just
wasn't good at math," but that it was *our* fault, not hers, ours as
parents and teachers for not yet finding the right way to help her
learn. You cannot believe how she brightened at hearing that, and how
much more interested afterward she was in learning her times tables.
By the way, she passed her tests with flying colors, and is forging
ahead with greatest confidence.

Best wisehs,
Byrd-ga
