Question ID: 544634
A friend and I are going to be moving to an apartment with one
ethernet jack but we need to have two computers set up in that room.
We already have two ethernet cables, is there something that will
split a ethernet jack so both of use can use it? If not, what's a
cheap way to work around our problem.

If you know of an apprioriate device, give me three or four sources to
buy it at a decent price. I don't need to be bogged down with 20
different Web sites; we're moving in in 3 weeks.

Thanks.

Hello gbfgbfgbf,

A hub is necessary if you need to share one Ethernet jack with
multiple computers. If you and your roommate wish to share a jack, or
if you have multiple computers, you will need to connect through a
hub.

From the Ethernet Guide:

A hub is a device that allows more than one computer to be connected
to a single Ethernet jack.

Great answer.

Two things: Is the cord that Amazon is offering with the Netgear one
the right kind (I noticed if you buy them seperately it's less than
the package price)?

I don't need a Web site reference, but what's the difference between a
hum and a switch?

Again, great job. Maybe there's a tip in your future...

Awesome. Sorry for the false start on the clarification request, I
just wanted to get the ball rolling.

To hopefully add to bobbie7-ga's very nice answer, all of the "big box"
computer or consumer electronics stores such as Best Buy, Circuit City
and CompUSA will have hubs/switches as well.

Yes, obviously, but I did ask for Web sites where I could get one
online. Thanks though.
