Here's the scenario. You're hosting a small dinner party. You've
decided to buy a very special (i.e., expensive!) wine. You're not sure
about your guests' level of wine knowledge. Should you draw attention
to the extraordinary character of the wine or remain silent on the
subject?

When all the guests have settled in, how about proposing a toast to
the wine itself, something like this:

"I propose a toast in honor of the extraordinary wine which graces our
table tonight. Let us raise our glasses to the vintners who have given
the world Château Le Snoot 1985."

I like that, Pink, and what amazes me is that you knew it was a Le
Snoot, albeit a 1961.

No, do not mention it. It will either be "known" and commented on by
your guests or it will not. Gusest should always be the focus, not
anything you provide. A humble host will always have a full table.

Inspector12: "A humble host will always have a full table." Though a
full host will probably not have had a humble table. :)

I agree with your advice. It would be bad form to announce at the
beginning of the meal "The beef you're about to eat is USDA Prime,
which, as you might already know, is $22 a pound. The wine rises even
above the level of the beef. I paid $3267 for it at Sotheby's last
auction, so do treat it gently." No, that wouldn't do.
