Dear Blucken,

I have found the number of units, but not the size in US$. The later
can be found in a report that costs $200. Would you be interested in
an answer about the number of units sold?

Hi Blucken-ga and thanks for your question.

I located the number of units of wooden entry doors sold in a recent
article “Residential Window Sales to Maintain Healthy Levels” by the
American Architectural Manufacturers Association and the Window and
Door Manufacturers Association from June/July 2002.

Here is an excerpt from that article:

“Volumes in residential entry, passage, and closet doors increased in
2001 and are predicted to climb steadily through 2005 (Figure 1). For
entry doors, the study notes that over two-thirds of the 12.5 million
units sold in 2001 were steel, with wood doors maintaining a 22
percent share. Fiberglass doors made up 10 percent of entry doors sold
last year, the report states. As in patio doors, fiberglass is
predicted to increase its market share in entry doors to 15 percent by
2005.”

So according to the above, (22% of 12,500,000), 2,750,000 units of
wooden entry doors were sold in 2001.

Figure 1 of the above article shows a detailed graph of door units
sold in five different categories from 1999 to 2005.

Obtaining the Reports:

“The Industry Statistical Review and Forecast is an annual report
prepared by Ducker Research as part of the North American Industry
Market Study, a full bi-annual report sponsored by AAMA and WDMA. The
full report features exhaustive data on a wide range of market
segments, including in-depth reports on demand for windows, patio
doors, entry doors, interior doors, skylights, and architectural
products by material, type, etc.”

Being a contractor, I've installed a lot of doors, getting the total
figure may require some work on your part, as the door industry is
fragmented. Here's a few links, you can probably email some and they
might disclose that figure, others may not want to.
