Jim.

The OECD -- an international organization of industrialized countries
-- has collected a great deal of historical data on obesity. In some
cases, the data goes as far back as 1960.

However, for Spain, the data only extends back to the 1980's:

Overweight or obese population

Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs. National Health Survey 1987,
1993, 1995, 1997, 2001 and 2003.

I found the reports for the average body mass indexes for OECD
countries (and boy, are we Americans fat!), but unfortunately, nothing
that extends back nearly as far as your question requires.

Are there any other time periods, or countries, or proxy data that
might meet your needs?

Let me know.
