Kat,

I live in northeastern Oklahoma, where native speakers of Cherokee are
quite numerous. I telephoned the Language Services division of the
Cherokee Nation Cultural Resource Center in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and
obtained this information:

In the Cherokee language, Tsinogena = (my] arm. Uhyusti = strong.

Uhyusti'tsinogena = Strong of Arm, which is the original meaning of
the English name "Armstrong," according to this site:

http://hate.systs.net/~shiko/Naming/Male_A.html

A fascinating note:

My source at the Language Services division says that when the news of
the first moon landing was delivered through Cherokee news sources in
1969, the name of astronaut Neil Armstrong was given, parenthetically,
as "Uhyusti'tsinogena."

Thank you for asking such an interesting question. I hope this
information is useful to you.

Best regards,
pinkfreud

You can find an English-Cherokee dictionary that lists "strong" and
"arm" at the following address. However, the dictionary is
insufficient to answer the question without some additional knowledge
of the language.
