Partition c: of my 10 Gbyte hard disk, on which windows 98 is
installed, has only 382 Mbytes free of her total 2146 Mbytes. This
seems to cause problems. Programs on partition c: are for instace:
Adobe Acrobat, Epson printer, Visioneer, Norton Internet security,
Scandisk, Visioneer scanner and similar ones. Does anybody know which,
if any, of these and/or similar programs can be safely moved to other
partitions which have much more free space, and still function
properly?

Vaac --

Any program can be moved to another partition but you'll want to
assure that all program shortcuts and links are updated to the new
partition. Windows normally does a poor job of updating those links.

You're best bet would probably be to uninstall the program from the C:
partition first, then re-install it on the other partition, specifying
the location manually during the setup process. "Moving" it manually
once it's already installed would be difficult.

Another alternative would be to get some partitioning software that
allows you to resize partitions, such as Partition Magic (I believe
owned by Symantec now). You could then resize the C: partition to give
enough space for new programs.

moving the files may cause incorrect file names and than they may not
work properly. I would suggest reinstalling the program in the other
partition after uninstalling the programs on the first partition.

I agree with eudean-ga -- uninstall some of your applications from
drive C: (partition C:), then reinstall them to some other partition.

Warning: make sure you have the install disks or files for those
programs before you uninstall them! :-) Some programs are easier to
do that with than others. Adobe Acrobat Reader (your question said
"Adobe Acrobat", so I'm not sure if you're talking about the full
Acrobat prog, or just the reader) is a good candidate for reinstalling
to a different drive because it's easy to download from the Adobe
website, and the program itself doesn't generally create a bunch of
custom files after it's installed. (AFAIK)
----
The reason why simply dragging and dropping large programs is unlikely
to work is mostly the Windows registry--when those programs were
installed, all or nearly all of them had many keys added to the
Windows registry--in general, any program that shows up in the
Add/Remove Programs list from the Control Panel has entries in the
Windows Registry. Any time you move a program like that to a
different location on your hard drive, you can expect it to break
horribly.

Good luck. And if your version of Windows supports it, you might want
to create a System Restore backup point before you get too involved
with this. :-)

Iīm not agree with omnivorous-ga because it is impossible, because you
need to transfer the registry entries, and thatīs so difficult.
You can ask for a software, but as I know, i donīt know nothing.

You have a 10Gbyte hard drive.
Partition C: on that hard drive is 2Gbyte.

is the other 8Gbyte free space or is it used
up on another partition? (like D: for example)

If the other 8Gbyte is available then get
Partition Magic (http://www.symantec.com/partitionmagic/)
and make your C: partition bigger. Make it as big as the
space available on 10Gbyte hard drive.

OR

Buy a bigger hard drive, they are cheap these days, and
image the contents of your old drive to your new drive.
Unfortunately you can't just copy the information but you
have to make an "image". Here are products that will do
a disk to disk copy.

works for Win98+: http://www.drive-image.com/
                   http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

works for Win2k+: http://www.symantec.com/ghost/ghost_personal/

Partition Magic is a handy tool to have what ever you do.

Thank you all for your suggestions to increase c: to more than 2
Gbytes. Howevwe I am used to the housekeeping used by the root
directory and FAT used by older system limiting disk size to 2 Gbytes.
With these systems I understand what I am doing, But with the new
systems allocating the whole disk space to one partition I don't.
However since the new system has many advantages I wonder if somebody
could expain how it works or call my attention to a web site which
explains this.

I've been in the same position several times and now partition disks
with 2 partitions, one C: for OS type software and the other D: for my
own data and all other installed software in d:/program files/.. I
have had Ultra WinCleaner One Click installed on my PC since it was
supplied free on a PCPro mag. free CD. It is a fine product and has
a Winsmart Mover feature that does exactly what you want to do. Under
the advanced button it allows you select exactly what features you
want to change, e.g. registry, autoexec, shortcuts, quick launch etc
and has an undo function.
I HAVE NOT USED THIS FEATURE myself as I don't have the problem but
everything else I used in this program worked perfectly. Try with a
program you have install disks for. Good luck.

Google search 'C:drive move programs from' found this good discussion
at http://help.lockergnome.com/lofiversion/index.php/t7357.html
recommending TweakUI (from Microsoft ) which seems to allow you to
move many special folders from the c: drive, including the Program
Files folder. Some discussion about the quality of 'folder moving'
programs.
So today I did try Winsmart Mover and it worked fine, moving programs,
reg entries, shortcuts etc. and kept the work done in a table ready
for an 'UNDO'. However when I tried to UNDO after exiting from
Winsmart Mover there was nothing in the UNDO list. Certainly worth a
try to move a selection of program folders.

Sorry no Programs can do this job because the Programs of c maybe have
own features.

you can:

1)uninstall the progarms and install them to d:

2)do it by yourself.
