How many wooden fence posts are used/sold per year in the USA.

Hi postsaver,

I haven't been able to find the number of wooden fence posts sold each
year, perhaps another researcher will have better luck or have access
to data that I don't. Here is what I did find, if at any time you
would like me to post these, please let me know.

For the 1997 and 2002 census years:
Dollar value of fence pickets, rails, and posts (unassembled), one
figure for all three products.
http://www.census.gov/prod/ec02/ec0231i321912.pdf

1965-1999
Cubic feet of industrial round wood (production and consumption) of
fence posts, poles, round timbers, box bolts, etc. (all lumped into
one figure).

Regards,
hummer

Hello postsaver-ga,

Please tell me more about the context of your question. By your
username (postsaver-ga) I hazard a guess that you're involved with
some kind of enterprise or are trying to size the market for a
product.

Please define what you mean by "wooden fence posts" so I know what is
to be included and what is to be excluded. Some wooden fence posts
have fences made of other materials strung between them while
residential wooden fence posts tend to have wooden fencing between the
posts. What kind of wooden posts and/or fences to you want to include
in the total sold per year?

The more information you can give about the context of your question,
the more likely I will be able to get you the information you need.

I look forward to your clarification.

Hi czh:

We are trying to size the market for our product. See
http://www.postsaverusa.com for product description.

By "wooden fence posts" we mean any post made of wood that is planted
into the ground (any ground e.g. soil, concrete, etc.) to hold fencing
of any kind. The fencing material that attaches to the post is
irrelevent. The purpose of the fencing and the dimensions of the wood
fence posts are also irrelevent. You can lump all sizes and uses of
wood fence posts together or categorize them if you wish.

Hello again postsaver-ga,

I believe I?ve found the information you need but it?s not available
for free. I?ve found two very expensive market research reports that
seem to have detailed information about your market. One of them is
available by small sections so you would be able to buy just the
sections that are pertinent to your market. I was hoping to find
substantial free quotes or excerpts in the trade press but I haven?t
found any. I also found a few more 2-3 year old reports that may serve
and aren?t quite as expensive as the more up-to-date ones.

Please let me know if the information about the market research
reports available for purchase would be a satisfactory answer. I look
forward to your clarification.

Please make me aware of all the market research reports that you know
of that provide the answer and I will be satisfied.

Hello again postsaver-ga,

Thank you for accepting my proposed answer. As I said in my
clarification request, I haven?t been able to find anything
substantial about the wood fence post market on the open web. I
discovered that there are some expensive market research reports for
two aspects of evaluating your market. Some of the reports evaluate
the fence industry as a whole and sections of these include reports on
the wood fence segment. In addition, I also found some reports that
evaluate the wood protection and coatings industry that may also be
relevant to your product?s positioning.

Here are the reports.

I wish great success for your PostSavers.

Description

Demand for fencing products in the US will reach $6.6 billion in 2009,
bolstered by nonresidential building construction spending and
residential repairs and improvements. Metal fencing will remain the
largest material type based on strength in nonresidential uses and

historical demand data (1994, 1999 and 2004) and forecasts to 2009 and
2014 by fencing type (e.g., metal, wood, plastic, concrete); by market
(e.g., residential, nonresidential, nonbuilding, agricultural); and by
US geographic region.

The study also considers market environment factors, details industry
structure, evaluates company market share and profiles 31 leading
competitors including Master Halco, Merchants Metals, Universal Forest

The $5.4 billion U.S. fence and deck product industry is a relatively
strong growing sector of the construction materials industry. Growth
has been spurred by increased spending on fences and decks by
residential property owners. This was due to a favorable economic
environment for U.S. housing demand. Industry growth has been led by
gains in vinyl and ornamental metal fence products, and composite and
plastic deck products. Growth in security fencing has also rebounded
over the past year. The industry?s material shipment mix generally
reflects homeowner?s desire for maintenance-free building products.
Strong growth and new material opportunities have attracted new
entrants to this industry and resulted in existing manufacturers
expanding production capacity. This has led to rising competitive
pressures.

information about the fencing industry from a slightly different
perspective. Be sure to review the whole Description and Table of

The 2006-2011 World Outlook for Sawn Wood Fence Pickets, Posts, and
Rails Not Assembled into Fence Sections
Icon Group International, Inc.
April 5, 2005
193 Pages ?
Pub ID: ICN1108572
Price: $795

The latent demand for sawn wood fence pickets, posts, and rails not
assembled into fence sections is not actual or historic sales. Nor is
latent demand future sales. In fact, latent demand can be lower either
lower or higher than actual sales if a market is inefficient (i.e.,
not representative of relatively competitive levels). Inefficiencies
arise from a number of factors, including the lack of international
openness, cultural barriers to consumption, regulations, and
cartel-like behavior on the part of firms. In general, however, latent
demand is typically larger than actual sales in a country market.

As mentioned in the introduction, this study is strategic in nature,
taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or
products involved. If fact, all the current products or services on
the market can cease to exist in their present form (i.e., at a
brand-, R&D specification, or corporate-image level) and all the
players can be replaced by other firms (i.e., via exits, entries,
mergers, bankruptcies, etc.), and there will still be an international
latent demand for sawn wood fence pickets, posts, and rails not
assembled into fence sections at the aggregate level. Product and
service offering details, and the actual identity of the players
involved, while important for certain issues, are relatively
unimportant for estimates of latent demand.

***** This report takes a different approach to evaluating the market.
I?m not sure if it will be relevant for you or not but it is directly
related to your product line.

The US market for decking will reach 5.1 billion board feet in 2005,
driven by repair and improvement demand and the addition of new decks
to existing structures. Wood will remain the dominant material, with
cedar and exotic hardwoods leading gains. Alternative decking
materials such as composites, vinyl and polyethylene will outpace
wood. This study analyzes the $3.4 billion US decking industry.

US demand for wood coatings and preservatives will reach $3 billion in
2007 based on higher value, less toxic formulations and solid repair
and improvement activity. Furniture, flooring and cabinet applications
will lead gains. Maintenance coatings will pace growth in exterior
uses due to the large installed base of wooden housing and decks.
This study analyzes the US wood coating and preservative industry. It
presents historical demand data for 1992, 1997 and 2002 and forecasts
to 2007 and 2012 by product (e.g., sealers, paints, stains, primers,
metallic and nonmetallic preservatives); by application (e.g.,
decking, siding, furniture, cabinets, windows and doors, fencing,
flooring); and by market.

Get a Stake in PVC Fencing
Lots of room to grow

?Fences are at critical mass now, where a lot of processors are doing
well and expanding rapidly,? says Harlan Doering, v.p. of Kansas
American Tooling, McPherson, Kan., a maker of dies and calibrators for
fence profiles. From a standing start in the early 1980s, PVC fence
sales grew to about $350 million last year, industry sources say. ?The
larger market of wood fences is $2 billion a year, so there?s still a
lot of replacement potential out there,? says the sales director of
one big vinyl fence company.
