We get requests by mail, and would like to check those requests
against a current list of Correctional Facilities in the U.S. Is there
a government resource (not a mailing list house) that maintains a
current list that we can subscribe to to update our database?
(Main goal is a current list at a low cost, so source of list is open
if current and accurate.) |

Is this the sort of thing you have in mind:
http://www.prisonerlife.com/prisondirectory.cfm
It's hard to know how comprehensive it is, but it certainly seems a
good start, with more than 1,000 facilities listed.
Let me know what you think.

QUANTITY: Around 9,000
One mailing house lists over 9,000 facilities. We list about 6,000. I
suspect the "true" number is around 8-9,000.
ACCURACY:
Ideally, we would like to know where the information comes from, and
how current it is.
FORMAT:
In order to update our database, we need an electronic file of the information.

The American Correctional Association maintains a directory listing of
facilities and personnel, and can crank out an electronic list for
you:
http://www.aca.org/advertise/lists.asp
I don't know what their fee structure is, though mailing lists can
easily cost 50 cents per listing and up.
There is no governmental source of such a list that I know of. If you
want a high-quality list, you're going to have to pay a goodly fee, I
suspect.
Let me know if this helps at all.

Have been quoted 9 cents per listing by a mailing house. Too expensive.

We have a list - do you have some idea of cost structure for having a
mailing house "clean" it and add what is missing? It's about 6,000.
