I have an IPod that I want to copy to a home PC. However, if I do this the PC will reformat the the IPod and wipe out its hard drive and all my songs. How do I copy the IPod onto the PC and keep the songs on the IPod? |

I use Anapod from Red Chair Software. It lets you interface directly with the IPOD so you can drag and drop files from your ipod to your pc and vice versa. the program is $25 and you own it forever including free upgrades. It can also allow you to make your ipod avaialble via web interface which is pretty neat. Here is a link to thier site. http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ |

If your looking for a free way to copy the music files back onto a hard-drive, make sure that you are displaying hidden folders. This is accomplished by opening a folder, Going to Tools - Folder Options. Click on the 'View' tab, and make sure you show hidden files and folders. Once this is done, Open up your iPod drive from 'My Computer', and you will see a folder called iPod_Control. Go into this folder, then click on the Music Folder, and use the copy & paste method to get the music of out folders F00, F01, and F02. This is a simple, and free way to copy music from your iPod to a hard-drive. Note: You cannot copy music onto your iPod using the same method, it must still be synced using iTunes or similar software. |

It's simple! 1) Ipod Options(Right Click on your iPod icon in iTunes) -> Select "Ipod" tab -> "Set to Manually manage songs and playlists" 2) Then go to My Computer and now you can use your iPod like a harddrive. Now You can drag and drop files! Here is a sample screenshot: http://img331.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ipod9nk.png |

Greggib, If you are looking to convert a MAC (HFS File System) formatted IPOD into a format which is usable (readable) by a PC running Microsoft Windows, then please refer to the following instructions: http://www.cavecanen.org/linux/ipod/ This process requires Linux to be running on your computer (which can be done using a boot-up CD such as the Knoppix Linux Distrobution which is a free download). http://macs.about.com/od/ipod/a/copy_from_ipod.htm This site lists commercial and free software for PCs and MACS and may be of assistance. |

Okay, jaycosolutions-ga will work (unless it's an apple formatted ipod), but it's not very user friendly. The best free way to do it, which I do often, is download EphPod (http://www.ephpod.com/download.shtml). install it and then hook up your iPod run it. go into settings and change the string to copy files to your computer to something like "%a\%l\%n - %t.mp3". This means when songs are copied to you hard drive they'll be of the naming convention like: c:\iPod Backup\Aerosmith\Nine Lives\01 - Crazy.mp3 etc. Once all are backed up you can wipe the ipod and drag the c:\iPod Backup\ folder into iTunes. The WINAMP 5 & Kazaa thing is bullshit. ranch-ga's solution only works if the ipod is currently linked and synchronised with your own iTunes, in which case there is not need to make a backup as there already is one! Anapod is good, but not free. The hidden folders method is awkward, cause the files aren't named correctly and are generally hard to find. the use of the tutorial at http://www.cavecanen.org/linux/ipod/ is an awkward way of doing this too. To use a MAC ipod in windows, simply download MacOpener (http://www.dataviz.com/products/macopener/index.html). It's not free anymore though, but you can get a discount (through EphPod) by going here: http://www.ephpod.com/download.html Hope this answers you question. Regards, Kev |

To do this, you need two things: 1) Search for "Sharepod" and download that. It's a program that you copy onto your iPod via My Computer. When you run it, it will let you copy music to and from the iPod and also allows you to create winamp playlists from your current iTunes playlists. If you use this program to export your music back to the PC instead of just copying songs from the iPod to the computer after unhiding the music folders, you will be able to retain the original filenames and everything without having to deal with Apple's stupid naming method. 2) Also, you want to prevent iTunes from synching to your iPod and erasing your music, from what it sounds. That's simple. Simply hold down the "shift" and "ctrl" keys together before loading iTunes and release it after it recognizes and mounts your iPod. The key combination prevents iTunes from auto-synching and erasing your music. Then, you can go to iPod options in iTunes to turn off autosynching altogether. I hope this has helped. These are the methods that I use. Good luck. |
