I need an ethnic/racial breakdown of the current resident population of the
Republic of Ireland (excluding northern Ireland). Something like this:

White 92%,
Black 2%,
Indian 2%,
Pakistani 1%,
Mixed 1%,
Other 2%

I've tried the CSO (central statistics office) in Ireland but any
surveys they've done dont ask questions about race/ethnicity. CIA
world factbook just says "Celtic, English", which isnt much use to me.

Since the economic boom period of the 1990s, large numbers of migrants
both from EU countries and beyond have come to reside in the Republic
of Ireland. In any city or town, one would be confronted with a large
number of foreign faces. It is however very difficult to get a
breakdown of their race.

One couldnot conduct a statistic survey by observing people on the
streets of Ireland, as some 6.5 million expected oversea
visitors(mostly toursits) will visit Ireland in 2005 (source 'Failte
Ireland' see http://www.failteireland.ie/?id=9&MediaID=82) comparing
this to the total population of just under 4 million, it becomes
obvious how inaccurate such a survey would be.

Just before we start I should say that one reason you probably cannot
find a simple racial table as above for the ROI is because it is not
useful to talk about "White and Black" in Ireland. This is a very
American concept. The closest you'd get to this sort of idea would be
to talk of "Irish nationals" and "Non-national".

And even in a racial sense the group "Irish national" consists of many
races who settled and invaded the country of many thousands of years.
Although it is probably up to debate which groups are included in this
term, It should be noted that even the base "Celtic" population
consisted of many groups i.e. Fir Bolg, Milesian and others. To a
trained eye it is still possible to observe some regional racial
traits in the base population which are a probably result of these
very early settlements pre Viking and Norman settlements. No matter
which group you deside to include, the term "Irish" in an American
sense are almost exclusively "White".

To answer your question, the best place to start to compile a table
would be to look at data from the CSO of Ireland and its census data
of 2002. A question about nationality was included in this survey.
(See the pdf file linked from http://www.cso.ie/census/Vol4.htm) While
I should say that I would be very critical of the accuracy of this
survey as I know that I myself was not included in the census despite
wanting to be and living in Dublin at the time.

According to the census

Irish           3,584,975
Irish-English      20,491
Irish-American     12,387
Irish-European      4,172
Irish-Other        12,249       = 3,634,274 White

UK  103,476
of which 95,301 white, 4,552 Asian, 2,069 Black, 1,241 Mixed and 414 other
( according to http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=273 )

Other EU nationality -> 29,960 (White or European race)
Other European nationality -> 23,105 (White or European race)

America(US) -> 11,384
of which 8,549 white, 1,400 black, 410 asian and 1025 other.
(according to http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/00000.html)

African     -> 20,981  Black

Asian       -> 21,779

Mixed       ->  2,340

Other       -> 847 + 11,236

And so according then to this data your table would be as follows

White     =  98.3%
Black     =   0.6%
Asian     =   0.7%
Mixed     =   0.1%
Other     =   0.4%

You should note the acuracy of the census of Ireland needs alot to be
desired, anyway this is the official table as can be best enferred
from the census "nationality" question. Hope this is as you wanted it.

Unfortunately I don't have the correct account for answering questions
and so can't be paid. I didn't know when I answered your question
along with a number of other questions. So, I'm qutie annoyed with
myself right now. If my comment/answer is how you wanted it, you're
best to cancel the question and save your money.

Anyway, I hope my comments/answer helps with whatever you needed the data for.
