I believe this question can be answered for the US (and you could then
use US data to make some reasonable estimates for the world as a
whole).

However, I've never seen data like this presented on a global scale.

Would US-only data meet your needs?

I have access to '02 census data regarding US firms. I'm looking for
some indication of # of global firms. Any type of firm with >1,000
counts. Thank you.

There may also be a gray area when looking at firms in some countries.
Will you be guided by the total number of employees in a Chinese
govt-owned industry or rather by the numbers in subsidiaries? Ditto
for other countries: the Tata group in India, for example?

The same applies for the US, for that matter, conglomerates.
