How many petrol stations are there in London? It's a variant on
Joel-on-software's interview question, which I ask as a "random
question" to interviewees in our IT company frequently, to get the
candidate to think
out a problem and make an eductated order of magnitude guess; I
personally think about a 1000 give or take a few hundred either way...
but I'm intrigued to know an exact-ish number

The licensing of petrol filling stations and other commercial petrol
storage facilities in London is carried out by the London Fire and
Emergency Planning Authority.

Southwark Council

According to London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority?s Best Value
Performance Plan 2004/05 , there are 900 petrol stations in London.

Excerpt from page 11:

?We also currently issue petroleum licenses for about 2,000 premises
in London, over 900 of which are petrol filling stations.?

?As the enforcing authority for PCA in London this Authority currently
issues licenses for approximately 2,000 different premises in the
capital. Over 900 of these premises are petrol filling stations and
the remainder are workplaces keeping can/drum stores of petroleum

There are currently 10,350 petrol stations in the United Kingdom.
