bizcat-ga,

I can provide you an Excel file listing 27,746 hotels/motels in the US
with 2 or more stories...this appears to be a pretty comprehensive
list, although I am sure there are some hotels missing from the
database.

The file can be readily sorted to provide statistics for each state on
the number of hotels according to the number of floors.

For instance, there are 147 hotels listed in the database in Alaska
with two or more stories, broken out as follows:

Stories.......# of hotels

22................2
20................1
16................1
15................1
14................1
9.................2
8.................2
6.................1
5.................4
4................13
3................57
2................63

I can provide a similar breakout for all states, but this would
require more effort than can be justified for a $20 question.
However, you can certainly sort the data on your own to create the
relevant numbers.

A typical hotel record looks like this:

Captain Cook Hotel
39 W 5TH Ave
Anchorage AK 99501
(907) 276-6000
22 Stories
Sprinkler System Present

Let me know what you think.

Dear pafalafa...

That number seems too small. For reference, there are 346,000 2+ story
commercial buildings, 60,000 2+ story hospitals and 15 million 2+
story apartment buildings in the US... there have to be more than
27,000 hotels. The number should be closer to 200,000 to 1 million...

I am happy to sort the data myself, I just need your help finding it.

bizcat-ga,

I'm certainly willing to continue the hunt, of course. But it would
help enormously to know what the source was for the numbers you cited.

Let me know as much as you can.

By the way, the Census Bureau reports that there are only about 46,000
hotels (of all sizes) in the US:

so your estimate of 200,000 to a million seems way off.

The database I have includes 36,000 hotels (only 27,000+ of which are
2 stories or more), so it does seem to be a fairly complete list. I'm
not sure you'll find a more comprehensive dataset out there.

But like I said, let me know where you got your numbers from, and I'll
look into it a bit more.
