SUMMARY: What is the cheapest black & white printer cartidge for the
HP LaserJet Printer 1022 and how many pages will it print before
running out?

I am trying to work out whether it is cost-effective to buy a new b&w
laser printer compared with the colour inkjet I already own. I want to
be able to print lots of online stuff to read and so the economics of
whether this is a good purchase is the ongoing printer cartridge costs
not the one-off cost of the printer itself. Clearly the most
meaningful measure of how long a cartridge is likely to last is the
number of pages it will print before running out.

I also am unsure of what the best value cartridge is (i.e. quality but
low cost). I've looked on retail sites like
http://www.johnlewis.com/Shopping/Product.aspx?ARA=Computing&CAT=Printing+%26+Scanning&SCT=+Printing+%26+Scanning&PRT=+Printers+&Type=SKU&Id=230212180
and also HP's site http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?storeName=storefronts&landing=storefronts&category=laserjets_bw&subcat1=entry_level&catLevel=2&product_code=Q5912A%23ABA

I can't find the information I'm looking for, hence the Google Answers attempt.

The original cartridge from HP will print 2000 pages:

http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?product_code=Q2612A&tab=overview&storeName=&landing=&category=&subcat1=&catLevel=#defaultAnchor

The 2000 pages is an estimate based on prints with 5% page coverage.
The price of the original HP cartridge will vary only slightly
between retailers, and this is the only cartridge HP manufactures for
this printer.
Compatible toner cartridges from other manufacturers are built to be
as identical to this HP cartridge as possible, so their yield will
also be approximately 2000 pages. Compatible toner cartridges are
cheaper than original HP cartridges, however, there are very many
manufacturers that make them, thus it is hard to determine which one
is the cheapest.

I, myself, have had a positive experience when using compatible toner
cartridges with HP printers - I haven't had a problem with them yet.

Thanks v.much!

So it seems the average cost p/page is in fact cheaper with the laser printer.

HP 56 Black Inkjet Print cartridge
(Price: $19.99)
Average cartridge yield: 450 standard pages
= 0.044 / page

HP LaserJet Q2612A Black Print
($69.99)
Average cartridge yield: 2,000 standard pages
= 0.035 / page
