In November of 2003 the BBC (and almost every other news agency on the
planet) reported a story about an Indian man, named Prahlad Jani, who
claims to have lived for 68 years without food or water.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3236118.stm

I am a highly skeptical person. I know this is simply not possible.
I have read comments made by James Randi and Robert T. Carroll (Two
skeptics that I respect).

Have there been any new developments on this story? Has the "Sterling
Hospital" actually released an official report? Has anyone clearly
exposed this as a fraud yet?

Methinks there's a bit of the following going on...

There once was a lady called Maud
Whose girth was decidedly broad
She never was able
To eat at the table
But back in the pantry, my gawd!

This site might be of interest to you. The subject of the site,
Hira Ratan Manek, has

"...had three strict fastings, during which he had just sun
energy and only water and was under the control and observation
of various science and medical teams."

[...]

"Since June 18th, 1995, HRM has and continues to live only
on sun energy and water. Occasionally, for hospitality and
social purposes, he drinks tea, coffee and buttermilk."

[...]

"HRM was invited to Thomas Jefferson University and
University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he
underwent a 130 day observation period. This
Science/Medical Team wanted to observe and examine
his retina, pineal gland and brain, therefore this
observation team was led by Dr. Andrew B. Newberg,
a leading authority on the brain and also featured
in the recent movie "What the Bleep Do We Know",
and by Dr. George C. Brenard, the leading authority
on the pineal gland. Initial results found that the
gray cells in HRM's brain are regenerating. 700
photographs have been taken where the neurons were
reported to be active and not dying. Furthermore,
the pineal gland was expanding and not shrinking
which is typically what happens after mid fifties
and its maximum average size is about 6 x 6 mm,
however for HRM, it has been measured to be at
 8 x 11 mm."

You might also look up the nun, Theresa Neumann, whom
scientists followed into the bathroom when they learned
she claimed to "live on light" - doing so for over 40
years. She also experienced the stigmata and the passion
of Christ every Friday, losing about 8 pounds by way of
bleeding, and regaining the weight every week.

There are other documented examples, as well, but none
so thoroughly examined as Hira Ratan Manek.

I've also done some research on HRM. One common thread between HRM
and Prahlad Jani is that Sudhir V. Shah M.D was involved in both of
their "Medical supervised studies".

I haven't been able to locate very much information on this doctor. I
find it suspect that he was involved in both of these cases.

Perhaps the good doctor is simply giving them enough food during these
tests for subsistence.

I'm going to assume that these are either hoaxes or the tests were
done in manner which was easily comprimised by the subjects.

The bottom line is that humans cannot survive without food and water,
that's why people starve to death.

I totally agree with skepticalkevin LOLLLLL

It's just doo damn rediculous, especially since he found that the same
doc worked on both cases, how suss is that!

baz :)
