A recent essay in a southern newspaper included the following quote:
"This American Outlook grows out of the historic repudiation by our
founding fathers of the old world which they fled, with its castes,
conflicts, stratification, ghettos, and cruel boundaries between men.
We believe in a society in which men can move vertically from level to
level freely in accordance with their ability and horizontally mingle
unrestrainedly with their fellow citizens."
This is probably an unattributed quote from an earlier essay in a book
or portion of a book entitled "Man and Man" or "On Being American." I
would like the ORIGINAL source, publication date, author and
publisher. And if possible how to acquire the ORIGINAL source, not a
copy of the recent article. |

I tried contacting the editor of the newspaper that I found the
article, Celebrate Inclusiveness on Independence Day, written by Rabbi
Kenneth I. Segel to which that passage is part of. This is the email
reply I got. It seems I opened a can of worms!
"This note arived at the templebethor website (which I maintain} and I
would feel awkward giving this to our rabbi as it appears he may have
"borrowed" the passage or indeed the entire article and not given it
correct attribution. It is a matter of utmost discretion that we at
the temple learn the originator of the article before confronting the
Rabbi with this evidence. Thank you for understanding.
If you do learn the original source for this material, I would
appreciate hearing from you via google answers. If this is not
something you feel comfortable doing, I would like to know this so I
can search elsewhere. Again, Thank you."
