I think I?ve found a source of California museum curator salaries that
is available for a fee of $25. This may be worth it to you since it
provides fairly comprehensive information specific to California.
I?ve found some general salary surveys as well that include art
curator salaries. These will give you ballpark figures but you will
have to do additional research to find out how much salary
differential you can expect for the Ph.D. in a particular location for
a particular job classification. I think your best bet to get
information about salaries is to join the professional organizations
for your industry and attend their meetings and network for the inside
information.
In addition to the general salary information I?ve also collected some
current art museum job postings to help you get an overview of what?s
available in the job market. Some of these job postings include the
salary offered.

2002 SALARY SURVEY OF MUSEUM PERSONNEL
Copies of the 2002 Salary Survey of Museum Personnel, compiled and
published by the California Association of Museums, are still
available.
This report is based on a survey of approximately 1200 identified
museums and related institutions in California. The salary and benefit
information in the report is based upon actual paid salaries and
benefits as of January 1, 2002 which were reported by 125 California
museums which responded to the questionnaire. At the end of the report
is a list of institutions which were invited to participate;
respondent identity is confidential.
The institutions are categorized by both total operating budget and discipline.
To receive a copy of the 2002 Salary Survey of Museum Personnel, fill
out this form and return it with a check for $25 payable to California
Association of Museums.

EARNINGS
Median annual earnings of archivists, curators, and museum technicians
in 2002 were $35,270. The middle 50 percent earned between $26,400 and
$48,460. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $20,010, and the
highest 10 percent earned more than $66,050.
Earnings of archivists and curators vary considerably by type and size
of employer and often by specialty. Median annual earnings of
archivists, curators, and museum technicians in 2002 were $33,720 in
museums, historical sites, and similar institutions.. Salaries,
though, of curators in large, well-funded museums can be several times
higher than those in small ones. The average annual salary for
archivists in the Federal Government in nonsupervisory, supervisory,
and managerial positions was $69,706 in 2003; for museum curators,
$70,100; museum specialists and technicians, $48,414; and for archives
technicians, $37,067.

NEW YORK. In 1997, the Association of Art Museum Directors surveyed
the salaries of US and Canadian museum directors and found the highest
to be $320,500 and the mean $118,564. Four years later, the top was
$496,080 with a mean of $160,130, roughly a 50% increase. (The FY2001
survey was based on voluntary responses from 175 of 230 museums with
annual operating budgets of $1.6 million or higher).

Museum salaries are monastic, almost by tradition. At the high end,
associate curators make almost $60,000 annually, but bookstore clerks
and visitor assistants start at $17,000, and the median salary for the
association as a whole is only $28,000. The union has asked for a
raise of 5 percent in the first year and 4 percent in each subsequent
year, of a five-year contract, while demanding the museum raise its
minimum salary to $20,000.
