What is the average starting salary for a museum curator with a PhD?
Even better, what is the average starting salary for an art museum
curator on the West Coast?

Hello santabarbara-ga,

The salary will vary tremendously depending on the institution and its
endowments. The salaries at the high profile city museums like the
Getty or DeYoung will be different from small municipal or volunteer
run museums such as the Bolinas Museum or Carnegie Museum in Oxnard.
How would you classify the specific museum you're interested in? Is
your username "santabarara" relevant? My preliminary search shows that
there are some general (national) figures available for museum curator
salaries. Will that be sufficient?

I look forward to your clarification.

West Coast, Los Angeles area, would be the location of the job.
National salaries would be fine.

Hello again Santabarbara,

Please review the following material and let me know if this the sort
of information you need.

Thanks,
Bobbie7

"In an average museum, what would the average salary be of a curator
who is just starting out?

Probably about $30,000 if it's a big museum, and $25,000 for a smaller one.

What would a mid-career salary range be?

It depends on the financial situation of the museum. With each level
you go up, there is a floor and ceiling salary. When you jump to a
different level there is a fairly substantial raise, on average I
would guess the highest salary would be about $60,000 - $70,000 a
year."

Hello santabarbara-ga,

I think I?ve found a source of California museum curator salaries that
is available for a fee of $25. This may be worth it to you since it
provides fairly comprehensive information specific to California.

I?ve found some general salary surveys as well that include art
curator salaries. These will give you ballpark figures but you will
have to do additional research to find out how much salary
differential you can expect for the Ph.D. in a particular location for
a particular job classification. I think your best bet to get
information about salaries is to join the professional organizations
for your industry and attend their meetings and network for the inside
information.

In addition to the general salary information I?ve also collected some
current art museum job postings to help you get an overview of what?s
available in the job market. Some of these job postings include the
salary offered.

Best wishes for your job search.

Museum salaries are monastic, almost by tradition. At the high end,
associate curators make almost $60,000 annually, but bookstore clerks
and visitor assistants start at $17,000, and the median salary for the
association as a whole is only $28,000. The union has asked for a
raise of 5 percent in the first year and 4 percent in each subsequent
year, of a five-year contract, while demanding the museum raise its
minimum salary to $20,000.
