I am a Spanish national who has been living for about 7 years in the UK. I live with my partner who is British. I comply with all the requirements to become a naturalised British citizen but I dont know whether if I do so I will lose my Spanish nationality or I could keep it and therefore have double nationality. Thank you | |

Greetings Dfons, I have just been checking on this matter relative to another EU country. On a German language site I found that Spain is one of the EU countries that does NOT have an agreement allowing dual citizenship for Spaniards who become a citizen of another EU member country. This confirms Rainbow-ga's information. Myoarin |

Thank you Myorain-ga and Rainbow-ga. I think this fully answers my question. I was aware that Spain had some agreements with Latin America countries but unsure whether the situation was the same with an EU country. Best Regards alfons |

I believe that there is a possibility that you may be able to keep your Spanish citizenship and also have British citizenship, if you were to marry partner. The key is that you lose your Spanish citizenship if you *voluntarily* aquire citizenship of another country. This means if you activily seek naturalisation. If however, you become a citizen of another country *by default*, for example automatically gaining citizenship of the other country by marrying a national of that country, then you will not lose your Spanish citizenship. note: I know that this applies to other countries that explicitly use the word "voluntarily" in their conditions, but please check if this is the case with Spain. |
