I would like to know the origin and meaning of the name Momeda.
It is a female given (or first) name, possibly with Indian/Muslim or
Trinidad West Indies connections, and has been used for at least 80
years.

This is a rare first name, indeed.

I have found only a single example of the first name Momeda in the
United States, and only one additional example in historical records
(from 1880).

Neither listing gives any suggestion as to meaning or ethnic context.

Can you tell me a bit more about how and where you came across this
name. What leads you to think it may be an Indian/Muslim/W. Indies
name?

Any additional information you can provide would be a help in focusing my research.

Thanks,

I came across this name while researching an article on MObile MEdical
DAta systems which is a project carried out in Europe for patients'
health monitoring. I found an internet and email address entry for a
Dr Momeda Shah Parsad (Consultant Radiologist) in Trinidad West Indies
and thought I might use the 'coincidence' in my article. I contacted
her by email and on the phone but she had no information at all.
Through other professional links in Trinidad I discovered that several
people had 'gone to school locally' with Muslim girls with this name.
I also found an entry for a Ms Momeda Deen (Dental Graduate) who had
worked in Trinidad in 2000. Further a War Remembrance Site lists a
Momeda Khatun, a war widow of WW2, in Pakistan. I did find a reference
to a Dr Kanako Momeda in the US and a Momeda A Parsad in Florida.

fenestra-ga,

Well, after a lot of looking, I can tell that there's no shortage of
information on MOMEDA, the medical system, but very little on Momeda
the name.

I'm surprised you found as many Momeda's as you did...it is an
exceedingly rare first name.

About the only thing that I can add to your list is that the first
name, Momeda, appears in the US Census in 1880, and belonged to a
50-year old caucasian woman who lived in Ohio, and whose parents were
born in Ohio as well. So it seems a name with American roots, as well
as roots in Trinidad or wherever else it might be in use.

I checked a few databases of Muslim/Arabic/Eastern names, but did not
come across the name Momeda.

Is there anything else we can do for you on this topic in order to
provide an answer to your question? Perhaps some information on
MOMEDA?

It does not appear as much is going to turn up on a search for Momeda
as a first name.

Let me know.

Thank you for your input.
When I first started this quest I looked in various name
databases/dictionaries without success. Some academic research
information is available to University undergrads and postgrads only
and someone with a keen active interest in the field of
Linguistics/Onomastics/Anthroponyms might be able to further the
search. I tried to find such a person but did not make any real
progress. Can you assist in this way?
Also, although I have found several references to people with the
name, I only found one person's email address and telephone number -
which, as I have previously stated, did not yield any answer. Do you
have any names, email addresses etc I might contact?
Otherwise unless a miracle happens and someone sends in a Comment this
will remain another of life's great mysteries.

This is a wild thought: could it be a female version of "Momed", as a
version of Mohammed?
