Over at least the past 10-years, broken down by year, how many average
phone calls (optionally broken down by wireless versus wireline) per
year has the average American made?
I?m looking for data that has been validated through government
filings, phone carrier records, or reputable analysts? reports. I am
not looking for anecdotal evidence.
An example the data I?m looking for is below (for illustration purposes only):
1995: 1,320 calls/person/month of which 30% were wireless and 70% were wireline
1996: 1,280 calls/person/month of which 35% were wireless and 65% were wireline
1997: 1,310 calls/person/month of which 34% were wireless and 66% were wireline
1998: ?

Oddly enough, data on the actual number of calls being made is hard to come by.
Instead, the government collects and reports information by revenue.
For instance, in 2003, total US revenues were $291.12 billion.
Breakouts are available for wired vs wireless, local vs toll, payphone
calls, etc.
Would the 10-trends in revenue data meet your needs? 2003 appears to
be the most recent year that the data is available.
Let me know.

Unfortunately no, I already have the revenue numbers. I'm looking
specifically for the call data.

I'm closing in on some numbers, but truth be told, it's hard to know
exactly what they represent without a lot of additional research to
get clear on the background of how the numbers are generated.
Nonetheless, have a look at this FCC report:
http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Common_Carrier/Reports/FCC-State_Link/IAD/trend605.pdf
Trends in Telephone Service
and in particular, Table 10.2
Telephone Calls and Billed Access Minutes of Large ILECs Reporting to
the Commission
This table details trends in local and toll calls from 1984-2003. The
numbers for 2003, for instance, are:
Local Calls -- 424,617,408
Toll Calls -- 81,217,462
Do those data meet your needs?

P.S. I can certainly get population data to find the calls per capita
trends, if that would better suit.

No need. I consider this close enough to my needs. Officially answer
the question, and we'll call it a job well done.
