Certain proteins can indeed turn genes on and off -- this has been
known for quite a while.

Recently published research also shows that some proteins can act like
a dimmer switch, lowering or raising the activity of a gene, without
compeltely shutting it down or having it function at full power.

Here's a link to an article on the new research:

Is this the sort of thing you're asking about? If so, what sort of
additional information would you like to make for a full answer to
your question?

Let me know...

Hi tedmccall-ga,

Do you have a specific gene or system in mind? The field of protein
modulation of gene expression is vast and narrowing the topic down a
little would help in keeping the answer brief as you request.

Hey,

Spend your money in buying this book:

"A genetic switch - Phage lambda revisited", written by Mark Ptashne
and published by CSHL Press.

The author explains in detail how some viral proteins are used by a
virus (the lambda phage) to choose between two alternative styles of
life (called the lytic and lysogenic cycles).

Combine these words in google and I'm pretty sure you'll get plenty of information
