Just so we're clear, the artists name is Cal Roch____k? i.e. the last
name starts with Roch and ends with "k" and you can't make out the
rest of the letters in between?

Also, can you provide us with any more details? Where you found this
print, style, etc...?

The minister of our church has a signed and numbered print--stark
black and white; close-up looking at the back of the cross, showing
part of the arm of Jesus extending across to where his hand is nailed
to the cross. The print was given to our minister by a lady who lived
in Richmond, VA. The artist's signature is in black script...and after
the "h" there is a line with something at the end that looks like
maybe a "k". I am interested in finding out about more of his work--if
we can determine who he is and/or where we might see his work. This is
a dramatic piece that our minister numbers among his favorite. Will be
most grateful for your help.

I've looked again--with a magnifying glass, and I think the
Artist'slast name appears to be more like "Roebuck"--the first name is
difficult to tell for sure. The print is perhaps in charcoal or maybe
Conte crayon and the name "Birth" is written in black script at the
bottom, more legible than the signature of the artist. This is print
34/100.

Hi Patty0,

Does this sound like your picture?

"Ed Roebuck he creates his "Slices of Life" by a technique known as
reverse drawing. Starting with a non-yellowing gesso board, he adds
shadows of graphite, then neatly erases bit by bit until the finished
product emerges. He describes his technique best, "I don't really
draw. What I do is erase."

"Powdered graphite erasing is an original technique that has taken
thirty years to perfect. A two ounce box of powdered graphite can last
a long time. I'm only on the second box since 1968. An extremely
economical medium!

Graphite can be very messy and demands respect; the results are
striking if the drawing is kept clean throughout the drawing process.
It's very exciting to draw a white line with an eraser into this dark
powder, and getting the erasers to the perfect sharpness feels like
sculpting and drawing put together. The finished product looks similar
to a black and white photograph."

If you think that's him, then I'll try to find out more about this
artist, some samples of his pictures, see if I can find a way for you
to contact him.

By the way .. is there a date associated with the print? That might
help us narrow it down as well.

Hi Patty0,

Ed Roebuck's website was online from 1998 to 2000 but has been off the
air since October of 2000. However, I was able to find an archived
copy of his site.

Rather than send you to that site, which takes FOREVER to load (even
via my high-speed cable access) I’ll copy and paste the information
here. Everything below is directly quoted from the site. :

--------------------------------------

ED ROEBUCK - BIOGRAPHY –

I first became interested in art during high school in Blackwater,
Virginia where there was nothing else to do but draw. After three
years in the Marine Corps, I came home and met my wife, Gloria, who
started showing my art while I applied to art schools. I was accepted
at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia.

I saw more art just walking to class than I had ever seen. Exciting
things were happening in art then. Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns were
doing their thing; pop art had just started popping, and the Beatles
had just arrived. It was the early 60s! The Philadelphia Museum and
the Academy had up-to-date shows, and at every show an Art Giant took
another new stride. The Academy is the oldest art school in the
country; however, its instructors were contemporary. One teacher I
appreciate is Maurice Blackburn. From rural Blackwater through the
Marine Corps, I only drew with pencils, so the brushes he introduced
to me were foreign objects. Mr. Blackburn taught me how to use rags,
fingers, and the other end of the brush to start a painting by wiping
through a wash. This technique suited me, and I easily adapted it to
powdered graphite later on.

Soon after art school, my wife and I had a family to support;
consequently, I became a good carpenter, still drawing at night and on
weekends. In 1970 in Virginia, a horizontal drawing I did of my
parents on a door won "Best in Show" over 500 other artists, mostly
painters. After that, my work was exibited along side of paintings (an
unusual accomplishment at that time,) and I was accepted in shows from
South Carolina to Washington D.C.

CONTACT INFORMATION

The prints available here are photographic prints of archival quality.
They will not fade or yellow. Limited editions of 500 each, signed and
numbered by the artist. If you have any questions, please contact
Gloria Roebuck at (757)-583-XXXX
----------------------------------------------------------------

I have removed the phone number above because it is no longer
registered to Ed Roebuck. However, you can see that he is/was located
in Norfolk VA. You might check phone directories for Norfolk and
Virginia Beach areas.

Unfortunately, when the website was archived, most of the pictures
were removed from it. They did however leave the thumbnail pictures.
What I have done is copied some of those thumbnails to a private
directory so that you can see them. They are really tiny so I’m not
sure how useful they’ll be, but take a look:

** Please note that these pictures will only be available on the above
site for 30 days.

What you might do at this point is contact any of the above Galleries
where he exhibited to see if they have contact information for Mr.
Roebuck. I also found this gallery which appears to be a central
repository for Virginia Beach area artists. You could contact them:

Finally, here are the links to the archived sites for Ed Roebuck. If
you have the time (and the patience), take a look through them. As I
said, they take forever to load. I checked 3 of them (Dec 7, 1998, Apr
27, 1999, Oct 2, 2000) and found no more useful information than what
I’ve supplied here. I remind you that the phone number on those sites
is no longer in Ed Roebuck’s name.

So, that should do it. I’d say, if this man is around you’ll be able
to track him down with the information I’ve supplied here.

Good luck to you!

Ok Patty0,

To see the pictures, just copy and paste the ENTIRE URL for the
picture into your browser bar. Make sure you include the WHOLE name
right out to the .bmp. I'm not sure why the hyperlink didn't work, but
the pictures ARE there. Sorry about that.

I've found an artist called Ed Roebuck, who's listed as making
"digital studio features a gallery of powdered graphite drawings, a
biography of the artist, and archival quality, signed photographic
prints." His website is http://www.edroebuck.com/ ; however, I'm
afraid I can't get into it at the moment, so I've no idea if his style
is suitable!

The description of Ed Roebuck, "powdered graphite drawings" is
probably correct for the print in question. How can we contact the
artist and learn more about his work? I tried the web site mentioned
to no avail.

I'm going to try and find some other details for him (this isn't
helped by a baseball player with the same name), but I was hoping the
site might be back after 24 hours or so. Alas, no luck.

Bless you, K!
I would love to know more about Ed Roebuck, how to contact him, and if
he has prints we might like to purchase for our minister's recently
renovated office!

THank you!

The reason the links to the BMP files don't work is because the URL
contains spaces, and web browsers don't create hyperlinks to content
with spaces in them.

If you use a '%20' in place of the spaces, the links will work:
