How old are the holders of annuities on average? Of whole life
policies? Of endowment assurance? Or term life policies? What about
pure endowment policies?

If possible I would like mean and standard deviation, as well as a
citation for the source of the data. To clarify: these are all
different types of life insurance. They may have different names in
different countries; data from the US or Australia is preferable, and
if a cross-country comparison is availible that would be even better
(though not necessary).

Your best bet for this sort of information is from reading into the
mortality studies that actuaries make of life offices. In the UK, this
would be found on the website www.actuaries.org.uk under the CMIR
section. You would be able to find an account of the exposure to risk
over recent periods at each age for each type of policy and this would
enable you to determine the average age. Note that the exposure
measure might be life-years or life insurance amount.
