I am frustrated by my inability to search the web for an exact literal string, i.e., a search for "E]" does not include the right bracket. A search for "search string including special characters" returns the result "search string, including special characters" (allowing the comma). I haven't found a solution on the web. |

You don't mention whether your question applies specifically to Google or other search engines, but I am aware of one Google hack that enables you to search for special characters in a URL. Obviously, this is less than ideal, but if it would serve your purposes, I would recommend that you head to http://safari.oreilly.com/ and check out Hack #31 (Search for Special Characters) in Google Hacks, Second Edition by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest. |

Thanks for the info, k_s_ Yes, a special character inclusive search would be nice in Google. I don't want to become a Google API developer at this time, but from the looks of Hack #31 I'd guess a developer at Google could easily provide a user-friendly interface. Are there any search engines that can accomplish a special character search via a standard GUI? |
