I used to book local bands in Seattle, many years ago. At that time,
I received 15% of the money received by the band. This was a
'standard commission' at the time, I received the same commission for
3 different bands...

I doubt it has changed, although the bands are undoubtedly making more
money now, thus the 15% would be more as well.

I've worked in the business for years. 10-15% is average. Some really
good professional, high-hitting agents get as much as 20%. It's really
something that the agent and musician(s) should collectively agree
upon beforehand. And get it in writing!

If you're the the muscician, offer what you think the agent's work is
worth. How much do they actually doing? Are they following up with ALL
details of the booking or just basically securing it and leaving the
details up to you. You guys can negotiate the rate from there.

If you're an aspiraing agent, start high (20% or less) with your
offer, and negotiate from there.

Thanks, y'all, really helpful. I'm a musician and my 'agent' (who did
nothing, just a friend of a friend who booked the gig) took 25% which
I thought was ridiculous, but I hadn't gotten it in writing before so
I kept my mouth shut. I'll know next time!
