A few months ago while clicking the remote I happened upon a TV show
that documented a contest between barbecue cooks from Memphis, Dallas,
Kansas City, and some city in NC or SC (I think). The panel of judges
was made up of working cowboys, and the show depicted them sitting down at a
long table outdoors, gorging themselves on barbecue from each of these
cooks over a period of several days. At the end of each meal, each
judge would hold up his score card and the points tallied. I can't
recall which city and, therefore, which version of barbecue, won. A
satisfactory response will answer that question, as well as the name
of the network that produced the show and devised the rules for the
contest.

Do any of the contests listed here ring a bell?

Justaskscott: no, I'm afraid they dont. I don't think the show that I
remember was a contest per se, at least not like the list of contests
displayed in your link. It seemed to be a one-time event that was
hatched by the TV network. The scenes of the eating and judging were
interspersed with visits to the most famous BBQ eateries in each of
the cities represented.

Landog: no, once again I don't believe it was a real contest, but a
kind of challenge set up by the TV network.

Hi Nautico,

Could it have been a program related to this book by Rich Browne, a TV cook?

If you scroll down you come to an English text.
Have to get it from the cache.

Here is a better site where you can click around to find more:

From the sound of it, you might have zapped onto one show or part of a
show with the cowboys.

The funny thing is that I seem to remember having zapped by something
similar - or maybe opened my square-shaped eyes for a moment and saw
it.

No, it was a full hour show and I watched all of it. The network
producer selected a jury of about 20 working Texas cowboys to judge
the major BBQ styles from around the country. Nothing in your links
points to this event, I'm sorry to say.

Hi Nautico,
I saw the exact show you are refering to. It was on the travel
channel, and they were having their own contest about what city had
the best BBQ. They went through each and described the differences,
and gave examples of great bbq restaurants. Then they had a group of
"cowboys"(or just rednecks in Texas)sit at the long table outside and
one by one had bbq from each city and gave a point rating for how good
it was. I forgot who won, but North Carolina was last.

If that is it, seems like Justaskscott deserves credit.

Nautico, you are right, I don't either. Was a little too fast to mark
the site and note that Scotty had already found it.

I hope you get a satisfactory reply. This guy looks like he is in the competition.

I keep wondering if this is part of the preparation for the small
dinner party with 40 year-old de Snooty. IF it is a BBQ crowd, I can
imagine that they would need a little vinocultural enlightenment. But
then it isn't likely that they would be the same persons who
appreciated cheese bits with their national flags.

But one never knows what kind of multi-culti friends ... Forget it!

Hope you find this and other answers, Myoarin
