Question ID: 549915
I was recently in a used bookstore and I came across a book on
sexuality from a women's perpective. It offered nude pictures on women
on amd showed various sexual positions. This book also showed about
brestfeeding mothers. The pictures were black and white and the author
happened to be female. There was a paper bookcover on the book and the
back of the bookcover pictured the image of the author and only the
author. The last word in the title of the book was "Sex." Does anyone
know about this book? I can't seem to find it after searching through
amazon.com and google.com...

Bobbie:

Hey, thanks for your patience and/or hard work. I just couldn't find
anything like this beyond that "breast" book available from
amazon.com... It was very frustrating... could still be frustrating to
this moment, because here you are with all these book titles... makes
it look like I wasn't working that hard at all...! :P

The other frustrating part is not writing down the author's name. I
really should have done that. I was too over-confident and thinking
that things were going my way. Oh sure, that book will be there for
me... right. Well, as it turned out, nothing went right on that day. I
kept on getting hammered by pain and grief. I guess that day was my
day to be really getting it, because there is no way around the enigma
of really bad days... or good ones, when you are lucky...! You just
gotta live them out (or relish while they last)! :P

So was any of the titles the correct ones? Are any of those authors
correct? I would have to bet money on "Susan Quilliam." That name is
the most familiar. I didn't recognize her picture on her homepage and
I'm having trouble finding any 1960's or 1970's-era books by that
author, like the one you've linked to. But I did see the table of
contents on amazon.com, where it discusses breast-feeding, like how
this book I remember did... with babies in the company of that woman's
partner. I was (no, I am) still shocked how erotic that book was, I
was so trusting... Oy! I'll remember to not be so trusting for a long
time...! :P

Yet, I don't remember the title being so long, especially on the
binding. I'll get back to you, especially if the book I managed to
order is the book I saw earlier in the week...! Thanks again for
sharing your wisdom and understanding... I do believe the Universe
owes you "Big Time!" :)

Not trying to be too redundant here, but perhaps your book fell under
one of these titles?

(The above is a listmania compilation with many of the books that
Bobbie7-ga listed, but also quite a number of other possibilities)

Hope this helps,

Bitmaven:

It's not redundant in a painful way, but I did come across that list
yesterday... :/

Anyway... for what it's worth, you've both been a great help in large
or small. Thank you.

I'm just really confuzzled on why obtaining the information on an
author, say... Susan Quilliam... was really all that hard. I guess you
all just really know your book titles and/or authors and you both know
the ways around a blank search box, blinking... laughing at you. :P

Clarification of Question by carl1975-ga on 01 Aug 2005 16:25 PDT
Hummer:

Yes, that one by Susan Quilliam, "Women and Sex," seems to be the book
I'm after. I have ordered it from that same dealer, I think... And I'm
comfortable on the return policy. I will know in seconds if that is
the book because I ordered the book in book jacket form. All the
pictures, such as the author's picture on the back of the book and the
pictures inside are still very easy for me to recall. I can't wait in
the span of these 5 to 10 days. It feels a bit insane... :P

Anyway, for what it's worth, the author's name is familiar, the title
is small enough to fit on the binding in a quick, readable way (it's
only three words long, what a simple title!), while the subtitle is
also kinda familiar to me. Plus, there's the fact that her "current
book(?)" on this subject, "Woman's Complete Illustrated Guide to Sex,"
does offer a section on breastfeeding. I saw that information on
amazon.com. I think I'm so close... :)

Yesterday, I was a bit suprised to learn that the book might not be as
old as I thought it would be (1994), but if this is the book I'm
after, I'll be a happy guy anyway.

A special thank you goes out to everyone able to digest this drama and
blathering. I know it may not be easy to cut through my "muck," but I
do believe I can still get what I want... I guess there's hope after
all. Of course, Bobbie7 should take most of the credit for my
satisfaction. Through Bobbie7's answer, I am/was (hopefully!) led to
the right book! So, um... happiness for all! :)

Oh yeah, thanks goes to google.com, too! :)

Dear Carl,

Thank you for letting us know how you are making out and for all of
your thank you's too. I'm glad to hear that you may actually soon have
the book you've been searching for in hand.

I thought I would like to explain how I came to find the title, "Women
On Sex", as I'm sure it's not as it may seem. After reading your
question and the clarifications, I observed that Amazon's inventory
had been covered, but since you had seen the book in a used bookstore,
I wondered if the book might be older than what Amazon would list. So
I searched Abebooks, with "sex" as the title and "women" as a keyword
(Abebooks lists books with ISBN numbers as well as older books without
ISBNS). This resulted in 16,512 returns! I proceeded to scan down
the list, page by page, looking for titles ending with the word "sex"
by women authors. As as found one, I would make a note of it and that
is how I came to find "Women On Sex" (although it has the same author
as one of Bobbie7's books, it's really just a coincidence). After I
had my own list, I compared each book on my list to the ones already
listed by my GA colleagues to make sure I didn't repeat any.

Had I known that you were going to order one of the books so quickly,
I would've posted a link which lists alot of copies to help you find
the "best buy", rather than just a single copy. Bookfinder is great
because it searches many book search databases rather than just one.
For instance, have a look here (most are softcovers so you are lucky
to have found a hardcover copy):

http://www.bookfinder.com/search/?author=Quilliam&title=women+on+sex&submit=Begin+Search&new_used=*&world_english=on&binding=*&isbn=&keywords=&minprice=&maxprice=&classic=on&currency=USD&mode=advanced&st=sr&ac=qr

One thing to keep in mind is that often there are several printings or
editions of a book published and although the format or dustjacket may
be different, the text is essentially the same. So you can't always
judge a book by its cover!

You may be interested to learn that "Women on Sex" is listed on The
Men's Bibliography: A comprehensive bibliography of writing on men,
masculinities, gender, and sexualities, compiled by Michael Flood.
14th edition, 2005.
Home URL: http://mensbiblio.xyonline.net/

Quilliam, Susan. (1994). Women on Sex. London: Smith Gryphon.
http://mensbiblio.xyonline.net/women.html

I guess that's all for now. Don't ever feel that you are giving GA
researchers more than they need to know. We all welcome communication
because it helps us in our research for posting the most suitable
answers.

We'll look forward to your next update to let us know if you've found
your book and which GA researcher should post his/her suggestion as an
answer (or if we need to go back to the drawing boards!).

Sincerely,
hummer

Hey Everyone:

When the book came in, I was like "Hurrah!" but when the book was
examined, I felt shot down. Is this a loosing proposition? I thought I
had it right, but there isn't a single picture inside. I don't think
I'll return the book... I noticed a few pages where I'm willing to
read the whole book...

But still, I can remember this book that I saw. It's still fresh in my
mind. I guess I'm a bit obsessed now, but that's okay. I'm willing to
be a bit obsessed in order to understand the other gender. Anyway, the
book I remember was illustrated with black and white photos, had a
title on the binding that was direct and to the point (like "Women and
Sex") and it had line drawings of sexual positions. Maybe the only
line art drawings were of the female, or maybe they were actually
showing all the (female positive?) positions possible when man and
woman are joined. I cannot remember now. But as I write this... I do
think it's maybe more likely that they are joined...

Anyway... so you see, in my struggle to remember the contents of the
book... my mind is pretty much "making it all up" by now. Maybe I
shouldn't be in the world of used books. Maybe I should go straight to
amazon.com...

I'm so clueless now. I'm really looking for direction... any direction
at all... Thanks.

Hi Carl, thanks for getting back to us.

Well, I guess it's back to the drawing boards! Don't get discouraged,
I'm sure your book will turn up with enough persistence and your
latest post gave some valuable clues. Here is another list for you to
consider, the first few being the most hopeful. When possible, I've
found the book on Amazon for the images and "Look Inside This Book"
feature, but they aren't necessarily the best buy. If you find
anything of interest, let me know and I'd be happy to help you find a
suitable copy. Also remember that various printings may look
differently so it's important to give priority to the contents rather
than the cover. Another point to remember is one advantage to using
the smaller, independent bookselling databases is that you can always
contact the bookseller first to ask questions before ordering.

hummer

Hi you can try going to http://www.naturalimagery.net or
http://www.russianbare.com they have lots of old books of that type.
I would call them because they have lots of books that are not listed
on their site. Hopefully this is helpful.
