.
I am looking for a moth trap that will atract 'forest tent caterpillar
moths'. This trap would function in the same manner as gypsy moth
traps on the market such as:

I need these traps right away. Can the GA team assist in finding a
reliable product?
Thank you

Do you necessarily need a trap for the moths, or would a trap for the
caterpillars be sufficient?

Hello justaskscott
I really need a trap for the moths. They are flying right now! Each
moth lays 300 to 400 eggs which hatch into larvae as the buds break on
the trees in the spring. To curb an infestation I need to trap the
moths.
I will give a $10 tip to an answer that adds information to trap the
caterpillars as well.
Thank you for your quick interest in this question.

Greetings Uzzz,
From the site, http://www.pherotech.com/forestry_quick_list.html a
Unitrap is recommended for trapping Forest Tent caterpillars, and its
design appears to be that of a moth trap.
Unitrap
"Trap most damaging moth species (Lepidoptera) with this reusable
plastic trap. Monitor to aid management programs. Unitraps utilize a
funnel design to capture large numbers of pest insects. Use where
large captures are anticipated. Pheromone lures are readily installed
in the lure basket. Unitraps are cost effective and durable for many
seasons of continuous use. Vapour tapes for quick knockdown of trapped
insects are also available. All green or multicoloured Unitraps
available."

Because it's Sunday, I'm not able to call the company to determine if
these are caterpillar-only traps, but I will phone them tomorrow on
your behalf, to confirm or eliminate this trap as useful for the
forest tent moth. If they are viable, I will post this comment as an
answer for you. Is this acceptable to you?

UPDATE: I've just phoned again, and every single department (including
the operator) continues to be voice mail only. Today may be a
Canadian holiday of which I'm not aware, but I'll stay on top of this
lead until I get an answer. :)

Hello journalist-ga
I took a look at the traps and I agree that it is not clear whether
they apply to the moths as well. I look forward to the news from the
supplier.

Greetings again, Uzzz,
Good news: I just got off the phone with Pherotech, and the Unitrap
*is* for the Forest Tent moth. Pherotech is the dealer to contact for
the traps, and the gentleman with which I spoke, Irving, said that
shipping usually occurs within 24 hours of purchase. When I inquired
about the cost of the traps, he countered with a question asking how
many did I want, and I told him I wasn't certain. His question may
portend that there's a bulk discount on Unitraps.

Thank you. Just spoke with Ervin at Phero Tech. These are 'monitoring'
traps and will not substitute for an insecticide spraying which he
feels is the only solution. They will, however, be able to alert
property owners that the infestation has moved into their trees.
Valuable information none the less! Traps have been ordered.
Justaskscott mentioned traps for the caterpillars. Would you be able
to supply that information too?
Best regardzzz

I located some products called "bug bands" - see
http://www.tent-caterpillar.com/4-forest-tent-caterpillar.htm and they
may be ordered through
http://www.treehelp.com/shopping/product-detail.asp?Product_ID=2198
"10 foot rool includes string and instructions...You can prevent
insect damage by wrapping your trees with TreeHelp Bug Band. It can be
applied at any time of the year to control immediate problems. For
annual ongoing control, apply one TreeHelp Bug Band in the late fall
and another in the early spring to prevent many crawling pests from
breeding and creating infestations on your trees....."
I also foundd one other type of caterpillar trap - burlap.
"Burlap wrapped around the trunk of infested trees will trap mature
caterpillar larvae as they crawl down trees seeking a place to pupate.
Place the burlap at about chest height, tied in the center, then
folded in half. The caterpillar larvae can be found here in the day as
they are searching for shade, but become trapped. Check burlap traps
daily to collect insects."
http://www.pmra-arla.gc.ca/english/consum/tentcaterpillars-e.html
Either of these may have been the caterpillar traps referred to by
JuskAskScott-ga (and I hope he contributes a comment about them - he
may have located a different type of trap than these two).
