Hello Mdpa173,

I'm afraid your son will not be happy with the conclusion of my
research. It seems that he should wear a full body harness, to prevent
turning over in a fall. Many adults wear a full body harness, so there
should be no shame.

Additionally, some rock climbing gyms may require children of a
certain height and weight to wear a full body harness.

According to IndoorClimbing and your son's size, he should probably
use a full body harness. He appears a ted too small for the waist
harness.

"Black Diamond Kids' A-Bod Harness The A-Bod child's harness is
specifically made for children 8-12 years old. Black This excellent
child's harness is modeled after the adult's Alpine Bod harness. The
A-Bod child harness provides functionality and comfort with gear and
belay loops to teach them how to carry accessories. The A-Bod child
harness is for top roping only. It has easy access buckles that makes
it easy to get your child into the harness. Made for children's waist
sizes 19-25in (48-65cm), legs 16-20in (41-51cm)."

"Petzl Simba Full Body Harness This adjustable full body harness is
for children 5-10 years old and under 88lb (40kg). The Petzl Simba
child's climbing harness is perfect for more aggressive and/or larger
child climbers. The Simba is a great harness for children who climb a
long time. Adjustable shoulder straps and leg loops with a reinforced
double tie-in point."

"...the chance of turning upsidedown in a full body harness is reduced
by the higher tie-in point. The higher tie-in point creates a lower
center of gravity causing the waist and feet to naturally swing down.
The full body harness is often used by beginning adult climbers as
well. It is an excellent choice for getting children under 10 years
old into the sport of climbing."

"Full body harnesses:
are designed for use with children and anyone whose body shape will
not allow a waist harness to function properly.
These harnesses incorporate chest, back and shoulder support to make up
for the lack of an anchor point at the hips. Most children need this
style harness until age 10.
Most harnesses must be buckled a very specific way in order to be
secure. Be certain that you follow the instructions to buckle
correctly every time." "Even the most carefully designed and cushioned
harness won?t be comfortable if it is too big or too small, nor will
it be secure. If a harness is too tight, it will restrict movement
and/or pinch. A loose harness slips, chafes, and, in an inverted fall,
the climber could slip out of it.
When fitting your harness wear the clothing in which you intend to
climb. If this isn?t convenient make sure you empty your pants
pockets, remove belts, and untuck shirts or sweaters before trying on
a harness."

"Full Body Harness -- Full-body harnesses are designed to keep you
safe in a wide range of climbing activities. The harness holds your
shoulders as well as your legs, preventing you from slipping out if
you rotate upside down during a fall. Since full-body harnesses have a
higher tie-in point than seat harnesses, they reduce the chance of
flipping over backward in the first place. Full body harnesses are
often used in climbing safety courses to ensure the safety of
beginners while they are learning to climb."

"Sorry. First of all, the good news is that child-friendly climbing
gear is available if you know where to look. Starting with harnesses,
many experts suggest that younger children, under the age of ten,
should use a full body harness to minimise the dangers of inversion."
"Your other option would be an adjustable sit harness with a high
tie-in point, again to minimise the danger of inversion. DMM's Alpine
harness will fit waist sizes from 17 to 43 inches and is widely
available - it also means your kids won't grow out of it...

If you insist on a child-specific sit harness, Black Diamond produces
the Wiz Kid, which is a scaled-down version of the Focus and fits ages
five to ten - again it's available from several major online
retailers."

"Young kids are usually top-heavy and don't have the hips necessary to
keep them from falling out of a sit harness: A full body harness is
the answer. Our Junior Harness is the only kid?s harness that features
padded leg loops, two gear loops and is fully adjustable for kids from
25 lbs. to 80 lbs. It?s comfortable, and it?s safe!

Always wear a harness that fits you properly. Various types of
harnesses are available. Try on several until you find one that is
snug but not too tight.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for keeping all your gear in top condition.

Don't expect your harness to last indefinitely. Weekend climbers can
expect a new harness to last about two years. The more you fall, the
faster your harness will wear out. Replace your harness whenever it
shows signs of wear or damage.

Maybe your son would be more agreeable to a body harness if it were to
look like this one:
