I am looking for a short story that I read quite a while ago. I have
no idea what the name is or who wrote it, but I can remember the
story. It is about a man whose cat has babies. He is at home when the
neighbours little girl comes over. She is a very nasty child and wants
one of the babies. From their conversation it is clear that nothing
can stop her from getting one and that she is not going to be a
good/nice owner. As she leaves, there is a splash outside in the pool
as the mother cat tripped/pushed her into the pool. The man leaves her
there to drown. It is not a very long story. I am not sure, but I seem
to remember that the name of the story is the name of the cat and
starts with or contains a "M" or an "A", but I might be totally wrong.
I might have read it in a short story book about cats or a short story
book of horrors/thrillers/tales with a twist. |

Greetings Anne,
I located a book of short stories titled "Crafty Cat Crimes" and the
page on which a description is located contains the titles of the
book's stories. Do any of these titles look familiar?

Hi there. Some of the names look familier, but due to the fact that I
read a lot and searched for the story myself on a regular basis, I am
not 100% sure. I will check at our library this weekend and will let
you know if the book does contain the story.

There's also a collection of short stories by Jeffrey Archer titled "A
Twist in the Tale." Check that one, too - I think it's out of print,
but you may be able to find it at your local library.

Hi there. I will check out the second book you mentioned - I do think
the first one is a more likely candidate to be correct. I ordered /
purchased both books and will let you know as soon as I received them
or get hold of them from the local library.

Thanks for keeping me posted. :)
I've read a story much like the one you describe (or the same one
perhaps) yet I don't recall a pool; I recall an old well or something
similar (and I could be misremembering).
Even if I don't answer your question, at least I've been able to
provide new reading ideas for you! If you are as fond of the short
story format as I am, and you enjoy simple science fiction, check out
"Microcosmic Tales" - here's an Amazon blurb about the book:
"Microcosmic Tales is a book jam-packed with short-short stories,
ranging from the span of a single paragraph to about four or five
pages at most. Isaac Asimov, the esteemed editor of this anthology has
likened reading good science fiction "to scuba-diving of the mind", a
trip away from the world you know into another universe of the
familiar. Then these on hundred story gems are his idea of a "quick
dip" into this genre. These short-shorts come from all walks of the
science fiction universe, from the patently absurd, to the darkly
funny, to the thought-provoking and profound. They're short, they're
fun-they're like potato chips! Read one and you'll find yourself going
back for more!"
It's OOP (out of print), but your library may have a copy. I believe
there are 100 SF short stories in the book (my copy is in my car -
it's great for when I need a short diversion while waiting in offices
or in a line).

Hi there. I can confirm it is not the second book that you mentioned -
I will still check out the first book. Yip, I enjoy reading and it is
good to get new ideas from people who enjoys it as well - thanks. I
will have a look at the last book you mentioned - it should still be
available second hand somewhere. Will keep you up to date. Buy

Okay, so Archer's out. I'm curious: Did you enjoy his style? If I
recall correctly, the last story in "A Twist in the Tale" threw my
"hopeful romantic" senses for a loop.

Hi there. I received my copy of Crafty Cat Crimes yesterday and
unfortuanately, the story is not in there. However, it is a very cute
collection of nice short stories -I think you will like it as well if
you like cats.
