I am looking for the name of the artist and the name of the release on
which the cover of this song appeared. I know that Lowell George of
Little Feat wrote Willin' (Weed, Whites and Wine) and they performed
this song. But I am sure there was a very big country cover of it.
Probably in the 70's? Waylon Jennings? Merle Haggard? My personal
searches have not turned up the version I remember. Gene Parsons? NOT
Jon Randall or Linda Rondstadt... it was a very mournful, slow dark
version.... |

There are some covers of Willin' in addition to the ones clouseau
mentioned. The Byrds covered it, but it was unreleased until
recently. Steve Earle covered it too, but it was both recent and
uptempo.
I think I'm going to go with Commander Cody's version. It came out
smack in the middle of the 1970s, and it could fit your description
(certainly better than the Steve Earle version I heard). Plus, I
believe that Commander Cody was a fairly big group/person at the time.
The clip I've found is not ideal; but hopefully it will allow you to
decide whether it's the version you remember.

If it's right, I'll be happy to post it as the answer.

Hey! Everyone. I am sad to say that, after having listened to at least
a clip of every one of these versions of Willin' , at least 3 times
each, none is the one we are after. I know you think I must be having
an Alzheimer's crisis here, but really, both of us independently
remember the same apparent version. The major issues with all of these
versions are: 1. Lead voice not anywhere near deep enuff. 2. Versions
are too fast with not much tragedy/pathos/mourning in the voices. 3.
All of these versions have at least 2 voices in the "weed, whites and
wine" chorus, where we remember that the music stops and the singer's
lone, deep voice sings the line. We are also pretty sure that it was
someone like one of the "outlaw" country singers.
I am frustrated that the Covers Project is down now being renovated.
And, I am, sorry to say, that despite the terific efforts here, I am
going to leave this question open for the nonce. But sure do let me
know what else, if anything, you may come up with....
Justaskscott, I am especially sorry....

No need for apologies, 1skee. I'm enjoying doing the research.
Could you be thinking of another version by Little Feat or one of its
members, perhaps performed live? In my initial research, I believe I
came across a slower, darker version by Little Feat. If you think I
could be on the right train, I would look for it again.

Justaskscott!! That would be terrfic! There are so many Little Feat
releases and they all have "Willin'" on them. See my last
clarification, that's the sound I'm looking for. My ear is so tired
now....

I'm thinking now that it's the version from "Waiting for Columbus"
(1978). You can hear a good clip on this page, along with several
other clips (including versions from two other '70s releases, "Little
Feat" and "Sailin' Shoes").

Justaskscott. OH. MY. GOSH.
You nailed it. We listened and listened, and it narrowed down to the
first two, and WE ARE GOING WITH the Sailing Shoes version. These were
much, much better clips to listen to than I had before. Thank you,
thank you, thank you.
I have ordered it overnight.
You have answered the question!!!
I am so excited.
