Hello r2, and thanks for your question.
The most current iPod software (v1.2), as you probably know, will show
all of your songs alphabetically only by "wheeling" to Browse > Songs.
Song lists within the Browse > Artists or Browse > Albums view can
only be viewed by track number within each album.
The answer to your question lies not in the iPod software itself, but
in the software you use to connect to your iPod.
Using iTunes 3, I tried sorting these default views by song title and
updating my iPod, but the default track-number sorting remained when I
checked the order on the iPod. The only way to change the sort order
in the existing Album and Artist browsing views is to manually reset
all of the song track numbers within their albums to follow an
alphabetical sorting order. The disadvantage to this is it could take
a while, and the original track order would be lost.
Instead, I recommend that you make custom playlists for all of your
albums with the songs sorted alphabetically. For example, I made a
playlist called "U2-Alpha" in iTunes. I dragged all of my U2 albums
into the new playlist, and sorted by Song Name, then updated. The iPod
reflects exactly the order you create in your iTunes playlist.
Currently the only way to have a custom sorted list like this is to
create your own playlists. If you do this for all of your artists, you
could essentially mimic the default Browse -> Artist -> Album view
without sacrificing the original track order.
