There's a song I remember from the early to mid '70s, I believe.
Because that's a long time ago, I'm not 100% sure about anything
anymore, although I'm virtually certain that one line of the lyric is:
"I raise my hand up to the sky." A google search yields a song by
Breaking Point, but that's not it. A line I remember more vaguely I
believe precedes the "fist" line: "Who are you and who am I?" (It's
not Childhood's End by Pink Floyd.) I remember the guitar, somewhat
like the guitar in Maggot Brain, quite inspired. Finally, I have a
vague recollection of a band name - Ellis. (Alice?) Searches on
those names have yielded nothing. I've been trying to find out the
artist and song title for many years now. Help!

The song you refer to is "El Doomo" by the band "Ellis". The year of
release was 1972 and the album was "Riding on the crest of a slump" in
Britain. Steve Ellis, the lead singer, was the vocalist from the
sixties pop band "The Love Affair" who had a hit single called
"Everlasting Love". Zoot Money, who later turned to acting small
parts in T.V. programmes, was the only other member of the band I can
remember. The 'B' side of the single was,I believe, called either
"Upon the Roof", or "I Won't Play your Game" off the same album. I
hope this helps.

Kazaclof,

Thanks for your comment. It does indeed help - in fact, it's the
answer I've been seeking for 25-30 years now. I was actually
beginning to think that maybe my memory was defective. But your
response enabled me to find Steve Ellis' web site, listen to a
one-minute clip of "El Doomo," and realize that was the song - even
though it wasn't the part of the lyric I remembered. Then I went to
the VH1 site and heard a different half-minute, which did contain "Who
are you and who am I? I raise my fist up to the sky," just as I
remembered it and have been playing it in my head for 30 years.
Finally, I went to Amazon and ordered the Steve Ellis anthology CD,
released just back in January, and started listening to it for real
yesterday. Thanks again for solving my 30-year mystery!
