I am currently in New York City and trying to get a position in
Charlotte, North Carolina. I have submitted my resume to several
companies which I am heavily qualified for however I have yet to get a
response with a NYC address as my point of contact. Why are companies
not even interviewing people if you don?t already live in the area? It
is very frustrating to me since I can be an asset to many companies.
It seems I cannot get the interview unless I live there, I feel as if
I am stuck here in NYC paying $2K in rent for the rest of my life. My
parents feel I should quit-move then re-apply down there, however I
feel this would not give me a leg to stand on for pay negotiation. If
anyone has a answer please let me know.
Thanks
M7

I had passed a written test and was on a "to hire" list with the City
of Phoenix (AZ ) for over a year. Although they assured me that
candidates from out of the state and even out of the country were
welcomed, they never did call me for an interview :(

Are you sure that it is the fact that you are not in Charlotte that is
causing your trouble?

Charlotte is growing rapidly with lots and lots of people relocating
from the North. So what you are doing is nothing exotic. However, I
had these thoughts:

- Your cover letter should explain why you want to relocate and what
you expect from the company receiving your resume. Will you need
relocation assistance (money)? Will you want them to fly you down for
an interview? You should word this information politely and
carefully. For example, if you are willing to spend the interview and
relocation expense, state "I would be happy to arrange my own travel
to meet with you and discuss this opportunity."

- Is your resume effective? It might be tough getting a job around
the corner if your resume needs work.

- Is there a demand for your skills in Charlotte?
