I went to renew my drivers license this past weekend and was unable to
do so because the state of South Carolina had a 'hold' on my license.
After contacting the SC DMV, I was told I had to pay a $100
reinstatement fee and complete a defensive driving course as well as
cary sr-22 insurance for a year.
Here's the problem....
I got a DUI on Hilton Head Island, SC 18 YEARS AGO!! BACK IN 1987!!!
I was a GA resident then when I got the DUI, and I'm a GA resident
now....never had a SC drivers license. Because I was from out of
state when I got the DUI, I was taken to jail and not released until I
paid the fine for the DUI going before the magistrate.
My license wasn't suspended, I wasnt ordered to go to take any sort of
class, nor carry sr-22 insurance.
I have since renewed my GA license THREE TIMES sice the DUI in SC, but
this time SC says I have to pay the reinstatement fee, carry sr-22 and
attend defensive driving class.
CAN THEY DO THIS 18 YEARS AFTER?? I NEVER HAD A SC DRIVER
LICENSE...WHY WOULD I HAVE TO PAY A REINSTATEMENT FEE TO A STATE I
NEVER HELD A LICENSE IN?? CAN THEY BRING UP AN 18 YEAR OLD DUI AND
MAKE ME PAY FOR IT LIKE I GOT IT LAST WEEK???
Please help....this has really upset me!
