Question ID: 551634
I went to renew my drivers license this past weekend and was unable to
do so because the state of South Carolina had a 'hold' on my license.
After contacting the SC DMV, I was told I had to pay a $100
reinstatement fee and complete a defensive driving course as well as
cary sr-22 insurance for a year.
Here's the problem....
I got a DUI on Hilton Head Island, SC 18 YEARS AGO!! BACK IN 1987!!!
I was a GA resident then when I got the DUI, and I'm a GA resident
now....never had a SC drivers license. Because I was from out of
state when I got the DUI, I was taken to jail and not released until I
paid the fine for the DUI going before the magistrate.
My license wasn't suspended, I wasnt ordered to go to take any sort of
class, nor carry sr-22 insurance.
I have since renewed my GA license THREE TIMES sice the DUI in SC, but
this time SC says I have to pay the reinstatement fee, carry sr-22 and
attend defensive driving class.
CAN THEY DO THIS 18 YEARS AFTER?? I NEVER HAD A SC DRIVER
LICENSE...WHY WOULD I HAVE TO PAY A REINSTATEMENT FEE TO A STATE I
NEVER HELD A LICENSE IN?? CAN THEY BRING UP AN 18 YEAR OLD DUI AND
MAKE ME PAY FOR IT LIKE I GOT IT LAST WEEK???
Please help....this has really upset me!
David

Have you called the Carolina DMV and asked them why this is coming up now?

Yes, I called the SC DMV. The woman that took my call couldn't give
me an answer as to why this is comming up almost 20 years later. All
she could seem to tell me is what needed to be done to 'clear' my
license so that I could renew them here in my home state.
