I'm a bit confused by this term (maybe I'm too naive). What is an
"escort agency"; what services does it provide; what sort of people
use it and what for?

The surface impression I get is what the name implies: an agency which
will provide people to "escort" you for a while -- say, to a social
function. However, sometimes they talk about "companionship", which to
me sounds like a veiled reference to sexual favours. Other times they
explicitly say such things are not covered.

Are export agencies an upscale version of brothels, basically selling
sex by the hour? Or do they really focus on escorting people
somewhere? Or does it depend on the establishment -- you get "real"
escort agencies and such that just use the name as a euphemism?

Why (or in what way) do people avail themselves of escort agency
services? To have someone to chat with on a lonely afternoon? As a
knowledgeable city guide? As a kind of "trophy wife" when attending a
function at which one is expected to be accompanied? (I have a bit of
difficulty imagining this; are there places or situations where people
are expected to be seen with a partner?) Perhaps to go to a cinema or
a museum or art gallery with them in order to have someone to discuss
the impressions or feelings?

I'm not quite sure what the best way of phrasing the question is,
since I don't really know what's going on or what exactly there is to
ask about. Feel free to leave comments or request question
clarifications if you don't know where I'm getting at or what question
I need answered.

Hi there,

I thought I knew the answer to this, but as I read your question I
realised that all of my knowledge of escort agencies has been via
movies and TV. The reality could be quite different... I'll answer
your question in three parts: what the agencies say, what the escorts
say, and what the clients say.

My opinion is that escort agencies exploit a loop-hole of sorts - they
sell companionship at very high prices. Although the women are not
obligated to have sex, they almost always will, but it is between two
consenting adults, and technically has not been paid for. The
experience is intended to be realistic, just like going on a date with
your girlfriend. You get to kiss and cuddle (I believe most
prostitutes do not let you kiss them). Some rich men will use escorts
purely for non-sexual purposes, which I guess the girls would prefer.

AGENCIES SAY THEY OFFER:
========================

Most say the same thing, and never mention sex, although many imply it
subtlely. They often use the phrase "full-service".

Why Use an Escort or Agency?
Escorts can fill a variety of companionship needs. Being with an
escort is a great way to recover from a break-up or divorce. The time
you spend with these special ladies can make you feel a lot better
about yourself and can help you rebuild your self-confidence. Escorts
are also great companions for traveling people who would like to enjoy
a dinner out or attend an event in the company of another person.
http://www.topescorts.com/faq.html

This, from Kelly, an escort in Geneva, is more honest!:

Why do you never mention sexual intercourse being included in your
services ?
Quite simply because my services don't include remunerated sexual
intercourse. My services are companionship for outings, dinners,
dance, shows, travels, etc...
I also offer striptease shows, playing a naugthy part and various
artistic services (including singing). I am at the basically an
actress, mannequin and model.
Having said so much, I don't pretend that when I am with you may well
see nothing to prevent me making love. I like sex very much. It is
most unlikely that I will not agree to make love, provided you are a
gentleman and the desire is mutual. This summarizes the relationship
between consenting adults ! So it is for you to make the effort to
seduce me ! It goes without saying that , if we have sex, the price of
my services remains the same.

ESCORTS SAY:
============

Escort agencies. You're treated like cattle, sold over the phone with
fantasy measurements and exaggerated descriptions, the phone person
(booker) plays favourites, you wait and wait and wait either in an
office or driving around in a smoke-filled car with a few other girls
until finally they drop you off at some stranger's house or hotel
room. You never know what's going to be on the other side of the door
you knock on, most clients are inebriated and sometimes abusive, and
even if there's a problem drivers are often late picking you up again
and the agency doesn't care. Agency owners can be tyrants and sexual
harassment is rampant. The agency pockets half or more of what clients
are charged.
( taken from Javina's Prostitution FAQ - escort agencies are listed as
one of the places where prostitutes work )
http://www.javina.com/JJ3/faq.html

I like to provide a "girlfriend" type service. What I mean by this is
that things will proceed naturally. I want us to have a pleasant and
enjoyable time. My minimum bookable time is two hours (but preferred
three) because I find it absolutely impossible to have any sort of
what I would call a "meeting of the minds" or at least some level of
human interaction that will assist with the making the forthcoming
sexual experience the best it can be. I have tried a minimum booking
time of ninety minutes but even that can seem "rushed".

Because my minimum booking is for two hours (I do prefer at least
three hours, but heck, I do understand that isn't always possible),
there is no need to get naked straight away (unless you want to). The
clock starts ticking only when money has changed hands. We could kiss
and cuddle for a while and then when we are ready we will get
undressed and go and have a shower together - this ensures that we are
both really fresh and clean and able to explore each other completely.

CLIENTS SAY:
============

"Most, if not all, the services listed in the yellow pages are sex for
hire services. I'm sure they will be happy to provide women for
"real" escorting, but they are really prostitutes."
(from a big page of experiences with New York escorts -
http://www.worldsexguide.org/nyc_escort.txt.html )

OTHER:
======

This is from an agency that supplies nude dancers, and they imply that
escorts are prostitutes:

"It's up to you, if you're just looking for dancing entertainment,
fine, we'll provide it, but our dancers do always arrive with a driver
and the driver does stay with the dancer until she finishes her show.
And be forewarned that we sell nothing more than dancing. We are NOT
an escort agency, you can find plenty of those listed in the phone
book under ESCORTS!"
http://www.nudepittsburgh.com/company/faq.html

An article reveals that an escort agency is an expensive sex service:

"A high-class commercial sex service, which targets top brass
expatriates, has been advertising its services through the web and on
its own website. Using the front of a high-class social escort agency,
the company gave itself away by announcing on its website that they
can accommodate any 'special needs or fetishes'."

Thanks for your answers, your opinions, and your links so far!
(Including the ones you apparently had to pull.)

At first, your answer pretty much confirmed what I had guessed -- that
escort agencies basically provide sex. The bit about "we only rent out
the companionship; sex is likely but is not part of the package" to
get around prostitution laws was interesting as well.

However, while looking around the Internet starting from the links you
provided (and also trying to find the source for one or the other
quote to which you could not provide the link, or which the firewall
would not let me view directly), it looked as if there are at least
two different classes of escort agency -- the one you portray through
most of the answers, and a higher-class, elite, more exclusive and
reclusive escort agency, which provides more escort and less sex
(though they also do the sex thing, but the focus seems not to be so
high on it).

An example of the difference seems to be, for example, in the quotes
from the escorts you provided -- Javina seems to show the seedy type
of agency while "A Lady for You", though apparently not affiliated
with an agency, seems to embody the more higher-class establishment.

Apparently, A Lady for You is not the only lady who markets her
attributes on her own via the Internet and prefers email contacts; it
seems that a market has sprung up (one articles relates this to the
"eBay effect" -- people always wanted to buy article X, and other
people wanted to sell it, but there was no wayy to get them in touch
with one another). Many of those higher-class establishments seem to
go more for the well-rounded personality than the pair of boobs or sex
technique. Two links to this kind of thing--

A Slate article on "How e-commerce is transforming the oldest
profession"
http://www.slate.msn.com/default.aspx?id=73797

An (Ex-)Call-Girl's story
http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7234/index.html
and sub-pages, for example
http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/7234/service.html
for a description of her former agency's services; the whole site is a
good read and her former agency appears to be fair number of notches
above the dingy pay-by-the-hour business. (And she rather looks down
on what she calls "'yellow pages' agencies".)

After having come across this difference between two kinds of
organisations that both call themselves "escort agencies", I was a bit
disappointed to not have that reflected in your answer. (On the other
hand, that could be due to the rate I had set.) Still, I'd prefer if
you could tell me a bit more about the difference rather than tarring
all escort agencies with a similar brush. At the moment, I think I
wouldn't give five stars for the reply as it stands now.

For example, I'd like more links to people talking about both up-scale
and down-scale agencies, whether as client, (former) employee, or
whatever -- or descriptions of what sort of thing is typical or how
things work out. For example, the New York City experience is a good
site because it shows several experiences from what is probably the
"yellow page" agency type, both good experiences and bad ones (not
getting what the client felt was his money's worth); the GeoCities
site I mentioned above would be a good link for the really-high-class
style, and ALadyForYou is probably sort of intermediate -- not simply
drive to the client and then wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am, but still
paying by the hour and not quite the exclusive, all clients
pre-screened by an agency embodied by the GeoCities lady (and also not
quite as expensive). (ALFY was a good link, I felt, even though she is
not with an escort agency.) Also perhaps how many people go more or
more often for the escort side (presumably, the more elite the agency
is, the more often this happens).

Another difference between the higher-end and lower-end places might
also be the proportion of regular customers; I got the impression that
especially at the top end, there were more regular customers (and the
clientele was also higher up socially), while at the bottom it was
more "whichever redhead you happen to have". (Though even at the lower
end there appear to be quality differences, from really bad where
people will rip you off to "decent" establishments.)

If you feel that my comments and request above are too demanding or
unreasonable, feel free to ask for clarification.

Hi again,

After much difficulty finding details of what it is like to use a
high-class, exclusive escort agency, I asked myself this:

"If I were able to pay thousands of dollars for a night out with a
woman, would I be the sort of person to write about my experiences for
the general public to read?

Unlikely. I also looked for websites for the top agencies. On top of
the keyword difficulties (most "yellow pages" agencies use words like
exclusive, top-class etc) I decided that the top agencies probably do
so well from word-of-mouth that they don't have websites. Referrals
from previous customers would help maintain a high standard of
clientele. However, I did find some useful links...

Rebecca - the list of activities she is available for does not imply
sex:
http://calla-lily.net/gallery.htm

Payton - her website includes pictures of her on an African safari.
Another website lists her rates starting at $3000 - 6 hours - nothing
sexual mentioned:
http://www.paytonshomepage.com/mainframe.html

Christal - £10 000 GBP per day, no mention of sex:
http://worldwide-escort.com/christal/

"Anne Marie" - $12,000 per day, with a two day minimum. Originally her
site had photos, but now there are none – she doesn’t need them!
http://www.educatedescort.com/

Article about Anne Marie at Salon.com:
http://dir.salon.com/tech/feature/2000/09/27/linux_escort/index.html

Article at Slate, about Anne Marie and Veronica, says:
"Indeed, both say that more often than you'd think, the "date" is all
about companionship, and they don't even have sex with the guy."
http://slate.msn.com/?id=73797

I also found two articles about exclusive male escorts, and both make
it clear that they do not have sex with their clients:

Do clients offer you money for sex?
Yes they do, but I don't go down that route.
( from "Male Order", by Sarah Hedley )
http://www.sarahhedley.co.uk/sex_g/men_think/order.htm

"Match the lady drink for drink, but try not to end up under the
table. If she does, see her safely home; these days, it's no longer
enough to leave her propped against a bus stop with an address label.
Whatever happens, never, ever have sex with a client, even if she
insists. And, most important, always get the money up-front. "
(from "Man for hire, dinner jacket included" by Michael Hewitt,
Telegraph )
http://members.aol.com/mhewitt102/teleg/teleg5.htm

Writer-director Wayne Wang explains the difference between US and Hong
Kong escorts to SPLICEDwire:

"I did a lot of research into the so-called "high class" escort world
in Hong Kong. You go to these clubs, you pay a lot to have them drink
with you, then you have to pay a lot to the so-called mama-san to buy
(the girl's) time to go out with you...Then you may have to buy her a
present ...You have to court her like that over a period of time,
where both sides are playing games, so that you think this is real.
Then you have sex. So it's a little more ambiguous and a little more
-- I don't know what to call it -- graceful, maybe. It's not like
here, where you walk up to somebody and say "$2,000 a night? It's a
deal. Let's go." It's very American and very up front. I find this
(contrast) to be interesting."

Hopefully I have saved you from trawling through the overwhelming
number of tacky sites that pop up when searching on this topic.

Thank you for your research and your answers!
At first I thought you simply confirmed what I had already suspected,
but your information was the starting point for finding out it's a bit
more complex than I had thought. And thanks for the extra
clarification and the links you found!

Just to throw my two cents in, I own the Mayflower Madam book, and it
is a highly entertaining, remarkably informative book.

Well worth the price.
