If possible, could you please list the 50 words you circled and put
them into the separate categories you have. This may help us better
understand the clue.

Best regards,
Rainbow

Were the categories preset or did you decide what they should be?

After going through the list and still not understanding what the hint
would imply, I think the best thing would be if you are able to scan
the puzzle page and upload it somewhere.

Let me know if this is possible.

Also take note of pinkfreud's comment. The words in the last three
categories are NOT antonyms.

I KNOW I SHOULD HAVE USED THE WORD SYNONYM,INSTEAD OF ANTONYM(MY
MISTAKE).AS FAR AS THE 10 CATERGORIES GO (I MENTIONED THIS IN THE
ORIGINAL QUESTION ),THAT THERE WAS NOT A WORD LIST,SO I HAD TO COME UP
WITH THE 10 CATERGORIES AFTER I WAS ABLE TO FIND ALL 50 WORDS (CHARLES
& JAROMIR DO NOT FIT IN ANY CATERGORY) AND THEN EACH OF THE 10
CATERGORIES HAVE 5 RELATED WORDS.I USED THE THE WORDS AMUSING &
STING(THE WORD 'SMART' INSTEAD ?)TWICE AS THEY FIT IN TWO DIFFERENT
CATERGORIES & I HAD TO FILL IN ALL 10 CATERGORIES PER THE DIRECTIONS !

I hope you and rainbow-ga don't mind, but I had a look at the
puzzle...I've never tried these before, and they're tougher than I
imagined.

I think the problem you're having is that you (logically enough)
started off by trying to fit the 50 words into TEN categories. What
you need to do it try and re-arrange them into NINE categories, since
the tenth category will be the five 'left over' words.

The instructions to the puzzle strongly imply that one category will
be something akin to "Mens' Names" (though more specific). Perhaps
sports first names:

BILLY
DAVID
JAROMIR
CHARLES
BOOMER

I tried working through the other terms, but frankly, my brain doesn't
work that way very well. So you'll have to do some experimenting.

The LOTR, Jabberwhocky and Tom Cruise categories seem pretty solid --
I wouldn't mess with those, But the others are more loosey-goosey, so
you might want to shuffle them a bit and see what you come up with.
And of course, no using a word in more than one category!

Let us know how things work out (and if you get the answer, at least
post us a hint!).

Good luck.

Hi rondanjr,

This puzzle is harder than I thought! Ok, just to keep you up-to-date
on my progress...I haven't gotten very far. :)

Seriously, the first mistake I can see are the words "sting" and
"amusing" being used twice in the list. This is the reason why you
have two words left over, which are "Charles" and "Jaromir".

I'll let you know as soon as I figure out more...if I can :)

Best wishes,
Rainbow

HI,I DID FIND OUT SOMETHING ABOUT THE 'QUINT-ESSENTIAL' QUEST PUZZLE
THAT I NEEDED AN ANSWER FOR.I FOUND AN OLD ISSUE OF THE MAGAZINE THAT
CONTAINED A 'QUINT-ESSENTIAL' QUEST PUZZLE,BUT OF COURSE THIS ONE WAS
SIMPLE.THE RULES OF THE OLD PUZZLE WERE TO FIND ALL 50 WORDS ,WITHOUT
A WORD LIST ,AND THEY FIT INTO 10 CATERGORIES OF 5 RELATED WORDS EACH
(JUST LIKE THIS PUZZLE),BUT ALL THE LETTERS LEFT OVER,INSTEAD OF BEING
A HINT TO THE FINAL ANSWER(5 RELATED WORDS),THE OLD PUZZLE WORDS LEFT
OVER WER ACTUALLY THE 5 WORDS THAT WERE THE ANSWER TO THE PUZZLE
!!!MEANING THAT THE OLD PUZZLE ACTUALLY HAD AN ELEVENTH CATERGORY AND
IT WAS THE ANSWER !!ON THIS PUZZLE I NEED AN ANSWER FOR THE WORDS
LEFT OVER IS ACTUALLY A HINT TO THE FINAL ANSWER;IT BEING 'TENTH GROUP
IS THE WORDS THAT DON'T FIT IN THE OTHER NINE '.SO THIS MEANS TO ME IS
THAT IN THIS PUZZLE THAT THERE ARE ACTUALLY ONLY NINE CTERGORIES THAT
HAVE 5 RELATED WORDS & WHEN THE ANSWER TO THE PUZZLE IS THE TENTH
CATERGORY OR THE 5 WORDS LEFT OVER WHEN YOU KNOW YOU HAVE 9
CATERGORIES OF 5 RELATED WORDS EACH.I STILL CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT
BECAUSE I HAVE THE WORDS 'CHARLES & 'JAROMIR' LEFT OVER AND I CAN'T
COME UP WITH THE LAST 3 WORDS THAT FIT WITH THESE TO FOR THE LAST
(TENTH) CATERGORY, WITHOUT 'DESTROYING' THE OTHER NINE CATERGORIES!!!!
EVERY TIME I TRY TO FIT WORDS IN THE TENTH CATERGORY (THE ANSWER
),BUT THEN I DON'T HAVE 9 RELATED CATERGORIES.I FOUND OUT THAT
'CHARLES' & 'JAROMIR' WERE PRINCES OR DUKES(ROYALTY) & SOMEBODY HAD
MENTIONED 'SPORTS FIRST NAMES',BUT AGAIN THERE WEREN'T 9 CATERGORIES
LEFT OVER WITH 5 RELATED WORDS !!! IF ANY BODY CAN FIGURE OUT HOW TO
GET 'RID' OF 'CHARLES & 'JAROMIR' WITHOUT MESSING UP THE OTHER NINE
CATERGORIES ,PLEASE HELP AS I AM SWIMMING IN A SEA OF CONFUSION !
THANK YOU,FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Hi rondanjr,

As I mentioned in my previous clarification, the reason you have two
words "left over" (Charles and Jaromir) is because you used two other
words TWICE (sting and amusing).

You listed AMUSING here:
8)(WEIRD ANTOMYNS)-STRANGE,FUNNY,PECULIAR,CURIOUS,AMUSING
and here:
9)(BRAINY ANTONYMNS)-BRIGHT,WITTY,SMART,CLEVER,AMUSING

You listed STING here:
7)('CRIME' WORDS)-FLIM FLAM,DODGE,RIP-OFF,STING,SET UP
and here:
10)(PAIN ANTONYMS)-IRRITATE,GRATE,CHAFE,NETTLE,STING

I'll let you know of any progress I have.

Best regards,
Rainbow

TO RAINBOW:I HAVE SINCE CHANGED MY CATERGORIES SO THAT I AM ONLY USING
EACH 'CIRCLED' WORD ONCE.I DID SEND OUT A CLARIFICATION NOTE STATING
THAT I NOW REALIZE THAT I NEED TO FILL 9 CATERGORIES WITH 5
(DIFFERENT) WORDS AS THE TENTH CATERGORY IS THE SOLUTION TO THE
CONTEST AND IT STATES 'THAT THE TENTH CATERGORY IS WORDS THAT DON'T
FIT IN THE OTHER NINE '.BUT THE PUZZLE RULES STATE THAT THERE ARE 10
CATERGORIES WITH 5 RELATED WORDS AND THUS THE PROBLEM IS THAT I CAN'T
GET THE WORDS 'CHARLES' & 'JAROMIR' ALONG WITH 3 OTHER WORDS TO FILL
THE TENTH CATERGORY AS EVRY TIME I DO IT DESTROYS THE OTHER 9
CATERGORIES !!!!!!!!!!!!!I CAN'T TAKE- 1)TOM CRUISE MOVIE LAST NAMES
2)L.O.T.R. NAMES 3)INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS 4)PRESIDENT MIDDLE NAMES
5)AUSSIE SLANG WORDS 6)JABBERWOCKY POEM WORDS 7)'CRIME' WORDS
(FLIMFLAM,RIPOFF,ETC.) 8)IRRITATE SYNONYMS 9)CATERGORY COULD BE
'BRIGHT' SYNONYMS OR 'PECULIAR' SYNONYMS AND BREAK THEM APART BECAUSE
THE 5 WORDS ARE RELATED AND BESIDES WHAT COULD BE THE LAST 3 WORDS TO
GO ALONG WITH THE 10th CATERGORY WITHOUT HAVING 9 OTHER CATERGORIES 5
RELATED WORDS ? PLUS THE RULES STATE THAT THERE ARE 10 RELATED
CATERGORIES.

rondanjr,

Before submitting your categories, consider the fact that "antonyms"
refers to words which are opposites of each other.

Hmmm? SMART could be a pain synonym, replacing STING. And FUNNY
could fit with BRIGHT WITTY ...

The words in the tenth group don't seem to have to have anything in
common, on the contrary, they may each be a word that possibly could
fit in a category, all just to confuse things.
That would leave under STRANGE CURIOUS and PECULIAR, assuming that
AMUSING in the next group is more appropriate, leaving space for
CHARLES and GAMALIEL (

Ron,
I am pleased with your new insight. Seems rather like what I was proposing:
the tenth category is just the five words that are left over, but to
confuse things, these may be words that might fit in one of the nine
categories, or words that suggest a category, such as STRANGE CURIOUS
PECULIAR.
As I suggested, SMART could be a pain word, and AMUSING and FUNNY
belong to the category under BRIGHT, thus leaving two places free for
CHARLES and JAROMIR.
But maybe there is another sort of the seven names, though your
"presidents' second names" seems subtle enough.
Good luck, Myoarin

Ron,

The tenth group could be STRANGE CURIOUS PECULIAR JAROMIR and/or
GAMALIEL and/or BIRCHARD, names that are strange, curious and
peculiar.

But then you need a new category defined that includes one of those names with
WILSON,DAVID,ABRAM,CHARLES - maybe a switch of one of these with one
of Tom Cruise's roles, if that is possible.

(Did it again, hit the wrong key)

Pafalafa identified DAVID and JAROMIR as athletes, maybe the others are too.

Ron,
I saw one horizontal word that could have included either the previous
or following letter (somewhere in the middle of the puzzle on now
expired site).
It now occurs to me that JAR from JAROMIR and RAM from ABRAM, could
suggest a category of 3-letter words (ART in SMART). But this would
cause a problem if it "freed" letters to write the clue. BIRCH is
part of BIRCHARD, same possible problem, though.
