I am using MS Word 97, on Windows XP. I did some work on a file, let's
call it File1, and then saved it. I then made a lot of further changes
and instead of saving it under a different name, using 'Save As'
(which is what I intended), I accidentally clicked on the 'Save' icon,
thus overwriting the original version of File1. I haven't done
anything else since then. I want to get back the original version of
File1, before my last 'Save' wrote over it. Is there a way to do that?

Hi jjjames,

You may be able to go back to the previous version of your document if
you have Word set to create backup copies of it automatically. Try
this:

1) Click FILE / OPEN
2) Choose ALL FILES in the drop down menu
3) Look for the document name which ends with .bak
4) If you find one, double click on it and pray

Good luck!

Thanks. Unfortunately I didn't have Word set up to create backup
copies! I have changed it so that it is now.

It is not relevant to your case, as you have already closed the Word,
but this have helped me: I saved the changed documents under "save
as", and then undid (clicked the undo button) all of my actions.
