Question ID: 552604
I have a website on a Windows 2000 server at home. I am connected to
the internet through Bellsouth ADSL (Xtreme). I have a Westel modem
and a D-Link DI-524 router.

My website cannot be accessed from a large part of the internet (2/3).
From the parts that it can be accessed the website works flawlessly.
However, from the parts that in cannot be accessed the following is
what the users experience.

1. Sometimes the site just cannot be accessed. Users get a Server not found error.
2. Sometimes the site begins to load and then the browser displays a
server not found message.
3. Sometimes the site loads completely but takes a long time doing so.
Often images are not displayed.
4. Occasionally the site loads just fine.

I recently relocated from Atlanta to Baton Rouge. At Altanta I was
connected to the internet through Charter cable. I operated the site
without a problem for three years.

The erratic and partial connectivity issue cropped up after my
relocation and changeover to Bellsouth ADSL. As you may have guessed
Bellsouth has not been able to help me.

The website in question is at http://news.sawf.org

I will pay the price that I have set only if your response helps me
solve the connectivity issue with my current hardware and ADSL
connection.

Please feel free to ask me questions.

bhanwra...

A trace route operation on your site clearly and consistently
indicates that there is a tremendous slow-down when the packets
enter into the Bellsouth network. There may not be anything you
can do besides switching hosts.

Let me know your thoughts on this...

sublime1-ga,

Thanks for your response.

I have been running tracerouts to and from some of the ip addresses
that are having problem accessing the website.

All tracert failures occur in networks outside the Bellsouth network.
For example, a tracert to an ip address within the charter network
fails after it enters the Charter network. When the tracert is
originated within the charter network the failure takes place at the
second router within the charter network. Yet the HTTP communication
to the concerned ip address is sporadic.

My only alternative in Baton Rouge is Cox. However, tracerts to the
problem ip addresses originated within the Cox network show similar
behavior.

it might more cost effective to consider hosting on a dedicated
server, or with a web-hosting package, as you will definitely would be
more likely to be able to have a bigger audience being able to view
your site

I do not think Bellsouth is really your entire problem.

I have been doing some tests and I think that part of the reason that
this is happening is (of course) your self-hosting. This is never too
great of a scheme unless you own a data center or have T1 or a
corperate line.

However I think one of the issues you might like to examine is if your
name servers are working properly. Also how long ago was this change.
Often times it is a good idea to keep your old ip address available
because many dns servers may still have the old ip address (I am
assuming you got a new one with your isp change).

I would agree that the best solution to this would be to simply get a
host. They are cheap and have VERY good uptime. I can provide some
names where you can get a good price. Alternativly I have a package I
am holding now that has available domain space. Please advise.

Currently (12:44PM Central, 8-16-05) I can get to the site, but it is hard down:
Server Error in '/' Application.
SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

I would suggest moving to a commercial host - prices seem to be as low
as $25/month for database and .NET hosting.
