I recall seeing a documentary, I think on PBS, where leading
production company insiders shared their "rules" for successful
comedy. I remember a group of maybe twenty cards on a bulletin board
representing a feature film, and one woman director downplaying the
validity of romantic love. Maybe the rules weren't fabulous, but I
recalled liking them. What was the documentary?

I'm pretty sure it was not within the past five years. More like six
or seven to ten years ago. I am pretty sure the movie "Airplane" was
included as a subject, and possibly Penelope Spheeris but I'm not sure
if Spheeris was in it, or Pillsbury or someone else.

They went through a list of must-have's like a character who is trying
to maintain decorum in the face of declining appearances. Stuff that
makes comedy laugh-out-loud funny.

Nearly every DVD has commentary and documentaries these days, so I
hope I'm paying enough.
