Question ID: 552778
I own a slimline model of PS2, and I'd very much like to bring it with
me when I travel. However, finding a portable screen seems much harder
than I would expect. First I tried the 7 inch PS2 portable screen made
by Pelican. It's specifically designed for the slimline model, and is
very portable, but I was put off by the resolution (only 480x234 or
thereabouts). Also, the device flatly failed to work the second day,
so I returned it.

I was somewhat surprised at the lack of other options at major
retailers (Pelican was the only brand I could find at Circuit City,
Best Buy and Radioshack do not carry screens designed for PS2). So
then I thought maybe I could somehow use my laptop screen (IBM
Thinkpad T42, resolution 1024x768), since I'll always have my laptop
with me. I asked a salesperson in Radioshack, and the only option he
could think of is a video capture device that accepts A/V or S-Video
input and has a USB output. I bought it and hooked up my PS2 to it,
and it worked, somewhat. The resolution was clearly better than the
Pelican screen, but the picture was locked to a window at the upper
left corner, and the rest of the screen is the interface for the
video-capturing software. I imagine this device will be great for
capturing videos in different formats, but what I really need is
something that gets a A/V input and feed it to my laptop screen,
without any bells and whistles.

So, to summarize, here is my question: Where can I find something that
will let me play my PS2 when I don't have a TV available to me? It
must meet the following requirements:

1. Must be able to display the maximum resolution that the PS2 can
output (TV resolution, I guess?) This is very important to me.
2. Viewable area must be greater than 7 inches diagonally (under a 4:3
aspect ratio). The larger the better, but please also keep in mind
that I'm traveling with this thing.
3. The display shouldn't lag so much as to make the games unplayable.
0.2 or 0.3 seconds would be noticable but still acceptable, I guess
anything over half a second can't really be considered.
4. It should be (relatively) easily obtainable within US.
4. Ideally, it shouldn't cost over several hundred dollars. But list
all the options.

That's about it. I look forward to your answers and comments.

While specifically designed for use with the PStwo, the
Joytech 8" Digital LCD Monitor seems to be capable of
accepting input from the PS-2, as well:

It's available at ChaosGames for $249.95:

sublime1,

That is an excellent find. I'm greatly impressed by the IGN review and
cannot wait to get my hands on it.

However, it seems that either this item has just hit the market, or
it's in extremely high demand. The only 2 US retailers I found that
have this item (Walmart and ChaosGames) are both out of stock. I will
accept your previous comments as a satisfactory answer, and I'm
offering an additional $5 if you can find a online retailer that has
it in stock and will ship it to continental United States immediately
(or within 1-2 days).

Thank you again, you've found exactly what I wanted.

Thanks for accepting my findings.I'll repeat them here for
the sake of future readers:

----------------------------------------------------------

While specifically designed for use with the PStwo, the
Joytech 8" Digital LCD Monitor seems to be capable of
accepting input from the PS-2, as well:
http://gear.ign.com/articles/631/631696p1.html

It's available at ChaosGames for $249.95:
http://chaos.com/?action=view&id=721568

----------------------------------------------------------

I'm sorry it's not immediately available. I already tried a
search for it from other retailers, and had no luck, and a
second search was equally fruitless.

I did find another Joytech monitor that doesn't have *any*
reviews, much less the glowing one received by the 8" one.
This one is 7", and, according to this description on
carromex.au, it comes with a Playstation Gamecube cable,
but you did specify larger than 7". It also makes no
mention of resolution:
http://www.carromex.com.au/BookDetail.php?item_id=279735

It's in stock on ChaosGames for $192.20, in black:
http://chaos.com/?action=view&id=697677

...or silver:
http://chaos.com/?action=view&id=697678

Short of a review and clarification of the resolution,
I'd be a little leery, though. Even the Joytech site
doesn't tell you the resolution, but compare it here:
http://www.joytech.net/product_info.php?cPath=21&sort=2a&products_id=31

...to the 8" here:
http://www.joytech.net/product_info.php?cPath=21&sort=2a&products_id=95

You can always contact Joytech here:
http://www.joytech.net/contact_us.php

You might also ask them about where you can purchase
the Joytech 8" Digital LCD Monitor in the USA. They
have a whole category devoted to it in the subject
drop-down menu for the To box... : )
