Yahoo used to (~2001) have all sorts of statistics for all major US
cities. Something like http://cities.yahoo.com. You could search the
database in various ways. It now seems to be gone. Does it still
exist?

The Yahoo directory has listings for all the states here:
http://dir.yahoo.com/Regional/U_S__States/

Once you select a state, you can click on Cities and get
listings for the cities in that state. Is this what you
were looking for?

Are you referring to:

"Neighborhood Information"
Yahoo! Real Estate
http://realestate.yahoo.com/realestate/neighborhood/main.html

It used to be:

"City Comparison"
Yahoo! Real Estate
http://verticals.yahoo.com/cities/

You can see what it looked like on the Internet Archive Wayback
Machine (http://www.archive.org/).

If you think this is correct, please let me know so that I may post it as an answer.

Incidentally, you can still see much of the data from the City Comparison site:

Results for: inurl:verticals.yahoo.com/cities
