Question ID: 553649
How do I access the info on a very old (1992) IDE hard drive? This
drive was rescued. It is by itself and I can't find out what kind of
computer it was installed in. It is a Western Digital Caviar 2170
(model number WDAC2170-50). How can I retreive the data?

There is no answer at this time.

If you could slave it to your main hard drive you should be able to
access the data. You need to stick the second part of the IDE cable
for your main hard drive into it, and a spare power supply thingy of
which there are probably a number inside your PC case.

Alternatively you could get a caddy with a USB link and connect it as
an external drive - I've only done this with laptop HDs but it works
perfectly.

hi there... another idea, if you dont want to do the actual technical
part yourself, is to send it to busniesses that specialize in this
type task. There are some firms out there who actually do this for a
living. You could locate them in your local telephone Yellow Pages,
probably under Data-Recovery, or Computer Data, something like that.
Of course, you could also look them up through Google.

Thanks! I'll look into a professional data recovery place.

Wolvies, do you think I could slave it? Would there be a compatibility
problem? It is old (from 1992) and only 170mb. I'll check it out.
Thanks again,
John

Slaving won't be a problem aslong as you control the bus speed
