Shepard was quoted as saying: "It's a very sobering feeling to be up
in space and realize that one's safety factor was determined by the
lowest bidder on a government contract."

Is this what you are looking for?

Thanks, pinkfreud! I looked myself and found that Yuri Gagarin. Was
actually the first man in space. Alan Shepard was only first American.
I suppose now I'm looking for a good Gagarin quote, if it's available.

Hello sandhills_crane,

There is disagreement among English-language sources as to what
exactly Yuri Gagarin said. But there is agreement on one word, which
appears to be the most famous quote: "Poyekhali!", which means "Let's
go!" or "Off we go!"

"Houston. It's been a long way, but we're here". Those are the words
of Alan B. Shepard, America's first astronaut in space, as he firmly
planted his first footprint into the Moon's surface.
