I have read on the web before that there are some open source software
that you can use to combine a number of different desktop into a
single desktop where you can move your cursor from one screen to the
other. It's kind of like VNC except it combines all the screens. The
best thing is it's cross platform. So you can even mix mcahines with
differnt OS. No amount of googling can find that for me.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It's some kind of virtual desktop. From the description you can do a
virutal multihead, move your mouse cursor from one monitor to another.

It's not just simply switching from one desktop screen to another.

I remember it's on sourceforge, but you know how "good" the search
capability of sf.net.

Not sure but it kind of sounds like you are talking about some sort of
VMWare? (www.vmware.com) or Xfree86 (www.xfree86.org) or even
X-Windows (GNome, KDE) these desktops? Not exactly sure, but it is
sounding more and more like X-Windows which allows for multiple
desktops, and does work on Macs, PCs, Linux. All of which do have VNC
capabilities, remote desktops. Gnome & KDE are Window Managers, but
try www.kde.org and see if that is one of the ones you are thinking
about.
