Dear winabet:

Thank you for your question. The most recent data available is from
the year 2000, in an article published in June this year in Economic
Perspectives, entitled "Location trends of large company headquarters
during the 1990s" by Thomas Klier and William Testa.

The ranking in the article was listed by population instead of number
of headquarters, so I compiled the below by hand:

Ranking Metropolitan Area Number of HQs

1. New York 239
2. Chicago 109
3. San Francisco 91
4. Los Angeles 85
5. Dallas 76
6. Philadelphia 70
7. Washington 66
7. Boston (Tie) 66
9. Atlanta 53
10. Minneapolis 50

That is good information, however I need to have more updated
information. If possible something from this year.

Dear winabet:

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but the above report was published in the
second quarter of this year (2002), just a few months ago. It was the
culmination of a two year study from data from the years 1990 - 2000.
As such, this is most definitely the most recent data available.
